Why in News

India and Morocco have opened a new defence channel. The first meeting of their Joint Defence Committee (JDC) was held in New Delhi on 8 September 2026. The word to note is inaugural: this was the maiden sitting of the committee, so every later meeting will be counted from it. Both delegations agreed to widen defence ties further.

The Indian team was drawn from many bodies. Officers came from the Department of Defence, the three Services, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, the Department of Defence Production, the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services, the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Ministry of External Affairs.
Which areas were discussed
- Training and military education
- Peacekeeping operations
- Military exercises
- Medical cooperation
- Cyber defence
- Defence industries
The two sides also spoke of co-production, joint ventures, technology collaboration, maintenance and long-term support. These are the practical steps by which one country's factories start working with another's armed forces.
The visit around the meeting
The Moroccan delegation is in India from 7 to 10 September 2026. Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani began the visit by laying a tribute at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The delegation then met defence industry representatives at DPSU Bhawan to see how far India's defence manufacturing has come. A visit to the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) is part of the programme, which lets the guests study India's military medicine.
Where the committee came from
The JDC is not a one-off event. It is an institutional mechanism created by a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation. That MoU was signed when Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh visited Morocco in September 2025. Bilateral cooperation between the two countries reaches its 70th anniversary in 2027, and this meeting is read as fresh momentum ahead of that milestone.
