Why in News

On 5 November 2026 the fifth edition of the India-US tri-service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief exercise Tiger Triumph concluded with a closing ceremony at Visakhapatnam.

India and the United States have wrapped up the latest round of their joint disaster-relief drill. Exercise Tiger Triumph 2026, the fifth edition of the bilateral tri-service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise, ended with a closing ceremony at Visakhapatnam on 5 November 2026. The exercise had begun on 31 October 2026, and the Ministry of Defence reported its close on 6 November.

How the exercise was structured

This edition had two parts, with armed forces personnel from both countries taking part in each.

  • Staff Exercise (STAFFEX): operational planning, academic lectures and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs) on present-day domains such as cyberspace and medical operations. The idea was to pool professional know-how and good practice.
  • Tabletop Exercise (TTX): the plans and concepts drawn up during STAFFEX were tested in a simulated operational setting, helping both sides reach a shared view of the problems and coordination methods involved in combined HADR missions.

Focus areas

The main goals were better interoperability and stronger mutual understanding in planning and running combined HADR operations. Special weight was given to joint amphibious operations, in which forces move from sea to shore, a skill that matters when relief has to reach a coastline cut off by a cyclone or flood.

Closing ceremony

Two senior naval officers led the ceremony: Rear Admiral Vishal Bishnoi, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy, and Rear Admiral Joaquin J. Martinez de Pinillos, Vice Commander of the US Pacific Fleet. Other senior officers and guests from both nations were also present.
