India Crosses 80 Lakh HPV Vaccine Doses in Cancer Drive

Why in News

On 11 September 2026 the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced that India had crossed 80 lakh HPV vaccine doses under the National HPV Vaccination Campaign launched in February 2026.

India has crossed a milestone in the fight against cervical cancer. More than 80 lakh doses of the Human Papillomavirus vaccine have been given under the National HPV Vaccination Campaign. That is over 8 million doses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the campaign in February 2026. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced the figure on 11 September 2026.

Who gets the vaccine

The campaign covers girls aged 14. The dose is a single one. It is voluntary and free of cost. It is given at government health facilities with the consent of a parent. Going by the Registrar General of India's estimates of 2021, about 1.2 crore girls turn 14 every year and form the annual cohort for the programme.

How the states stand

Full coverage of the target cohortGujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram
Above 90 per centBihar, Andhra Pradesh and Assam
Above 85 per centKarnataka
Above 60 per centChhattisgarh, Sikkim, Kerala, Telangana and Odisha
Most girls vaccinatedUttar Pradesh, with more than 22 lakh adolescent girls

How the reach was built

The work was done through the public health network. District health teams tracked the eligible girls. Paediatricians, gynaecologists and experts from institutions such as AIIMS supported the effort. Teachers, ASHAs and ANMs carried the message to families and answered doubts about the vaccine. States used methods suited to their own terrain, including rural, urban, remote and difficult areas. The campaign also used the U-WIN platform, which let programme managers watch coverage district by district, find the gaps and trace the beneficiaries who had been missed.

Safety and the global picture

Every session is held under a trained Medical Officer at a government facility. The facilities are linked to round-the-clock care for the rare Adverse Events Following Immunization, so that any such event is assessed and managed in time. Worldwide, more than 800 million doses of HPV vaccines have been distributed, which gives a large body of experience on their use and safety. HPV vaccines are now part of the national immunisation programmes of 87 per cent of upper-middle-income countries, 78 per cent of lower-middle-income countries and 54 per cent of low-income countries. With the Indian campaign in its final phase, the focus has shifted to the girls who remain to be covered.

Exam Point of View

Remember the milestone of 80 lakh or 8 million doses, that the National HPV Vaccination Campaign was launched by the Prime Minister in February 2026 for 14-year-old girls with a free single dose, the four states at full coverage, Uttar Pradesh's lead with over 22 lakh girls, the U-WIN platform, and the annual cohort of about 1.2 crore girls from the 2021 estimates.

Practice Questions

Q1.Government SchemesEasy

How many HPV vaccine doses has India administered under the National HPV Vaccination Campaign?

  1. A.More than 22 lakh
  2. B.More than 80 lakh
  3. C.More than 1.2 crore
  4. D.More than 8 crore
Show answer

Correct answer: B. More than 80 lakh

Explanation

The correct answer is more than 80 lakh, which the Ministry also writes as over 8 million doses. The figure covers the whole campaign since its launch in February 2026 and was announced as a milestone in the prevention of cervical cancer. Option A is wrong because that is the number of adolescent girls vaccinated in Uttar Pradesh alone, the highest for any single state. Option C is wrong because that is the size of the annual cohort of girls aged 14, taken from the Registrar General of India's estimates, and not the number of doses given. Option D is wrong because it misreads the crore and lakh scales and is far above anything in the release. This kind of question is best answered by keeping the national total, the leading state's figure and the annual cohort separate, since all three appear in the same release and are easy to interchange under time pressure.

Q2.Government SchemesMedium

Which of these states has NOT achieved full coverage of its target cohort under the campaign?

  1. A.Gujarat
  2. B.Mizoram
  3. C.Karnataka
  4. D.Madhya Pradesh
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Karnataka

Explanation

The correct answer is Karnataka. The Ministry places that state in a different band, saying it has achieved more than 85 per cent coverage of its identified target population rather than complete coverage. The four states listed as having reached full coverage are Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram, so options A, B and D are all wrong for this question. The release also notes a third band, with Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Assam crossing 90 per cent, and a fourth with Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, Kerala, Telangana and Odisha crossing 60 per cent. Questions framed in the negative reward candidates who have learnt the bands as groups rather than as a single list of names. Fix the four full-coverage states first, then the three above ninety, and the rest follow easily.

Q3.Government SchemesMedium

Which digital platform is used to monitor coverage under the National HPV Vaccination Campaign?

  1. A.CoWIN
  2. B.U-WIN
  3. C.eSanjeevani
  4. D.ABHA
Show answer

Correct answer: B. U-WIN

Explanation

The correct answer is U-WIN. The release says the campaign has leveraged India's digital health infrastructure through this platform, which allows programme managers to monitor vaccination coverage at the district level, identify coverage gaps and missed beneficiaries, and plan the programme and its resources better. Option A is wrong, and it is the most attractive distractor because the name is similar and belongs to the platform associated with an earlier vaccination drive; the release names only the newer platform. Option C is wrong because that service is associated with teleconsultation and is not mentioned here. Option D is wrong for the same reason, as no health account or identifier of that kind appears in the account of the campaign. Along with the platform, remember the safety arrangement: sessions under trained Medical Officers, with facilities linked to round-the-clock care for rare adverse events.
