Two silvers in one day
Indian shooting had a strong day at the Asian Games 2026 on 20 September, and Elavenil Valarivan was at the centre of it. She was one of the three shooters who won silver in the women's 10m air rifle, alongside Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod, and she then added a silver of her own in the individual women's 10m air rifle event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointed out that the individual medal was her second of the day.

Posting on X, the Prime Minister congratulated the trio and put the result down to hard work and teamwork. He said their success would inspire many athletes in the years to come.

In a separate message the Prime Minister congratulated Elavenil on her individual medal, said Indian shooters keep making the country proud, and wished her well for the competitions ahead. Two medals in the same discipline within a day, first with her teammates and then on her own, make her one of the names to note from this edition of the Games.
Where the Games are being held
The 2026 Asian Games are under way in Nagoya, Japan. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who is in the city for the Games, said India has sent a contingent of more than 500 young athletes. On the same Sunday he led the 91st edition of the Fit India 'Sundays on Cycle' ride at Meijō Park in Nagoya, where members of the Indian diaspora turned out to cheer for the Indian team. The minister said the contingent was doing well and the diaspora was helping keep the athletes' spirits up.
'Sundays on Cycle' is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports together with the Cycling Federation of India, the Raahgiri Foundation and MY Bharat. At home the ride takes place at the same time across all States and Union Territories, and more than 6000 NAMO Fit India clubs hold it every week.
