Amit Shah Reviews Gujarat Internal Security in Ahmedabad

Why in News

On 7 November 2026 Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah reviewed the law and order and internal security situation in Gujarat at a high-level meeting in Ahmedabad, attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Amit Shah, the Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, took stock of the law and order and internal security position in Gujarat at a high-level meeting held in Ahmedabad on 7 November 2026.

Who attended

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi sat in on the review. They were joined by the Union Home Secretary, senior officers of the Home Ministry and its subordinate offices, and officers of the state Home Department and other departments concerned. The agenda ran across border and coastal protection, the working of the new criminal laws, narcotics smuggling, cyber offences, terrorism, illegal migration and disaster preparedness.

Coastal and border watch

Gujarat has a shoreline of roughly 2,340 kilometres and it also shares an international boundary with Pakistan. The minister therefore asked for sharper watch on both fronts, and said the Border Security Force (BSF), the state police, the Coast Guard and central agencies must work to one plan rather than separately.

New criminal laws

The state was commended for the pace at which it has put the new criminal laws to work. In Gujarat 92 per cent of chargesheets were filed inside 60 days and 86 per cent inside 90 days. Even so, the minister wanted a special drive launched to clear a backlog of more than 25,000 forensic cases.

Drugs, cyber offences and migrants

On narcotics the direction was blunt: catching street-level peddlers is not enough, and the whole network with its principal kingpins must be broken, with financial investigation taken up first so that illicit assets can be seized. For cyber offences he ordered more capacity for S4C and for the 1930 helpline, and asked that counter-terrorism agencies be strengthened. He also sought quicker identification and lawful deportation of foreign nationals living in the country illegally, and welcomed the removal of 2,412 such persons under earlier special drives.

Other directions

Disaster management, fire safety, the Ahmedabad Urban Flood Management Project and the clearing of enemy property cases were all told to move faster. Closing the meeting, the minister asked every central and state agency to work in step and to review progress against set targets at regular intervals, repeating his pledge of a secure India built through a safe, developed and drug-free Gujarat.
