UPSC GK Questions 2026

Static general knowledge is the larger part of every UPSC general studies paper. The notices name the same areas again and again: the history of India and the national movement, Indian and world geography, polity and the Constitution, the economy and social development, and general science with environment and ecology. The balance shifts from exam to exam. NDA puts about half of its General Knowledge part on Physics, Chemistry and General Science. CSE favours polity, modern history, environment and the economy. CAPF adds security and human rights, and CDS spreads its questions across polity, history, geography, the economy and school science.

GK24's GK notes are written topic by topic in English and Hindi, as short, fact-first chapters that are easy to revise. They cover Indian Polity, Indian History, Geography, Indian Economy, General Science, Environment and Ecology, Art and Culture, Computer, and the fact lists of awards, sports, books and days. A new chapter is added in each subject as the series grows. Each note carries practice questions, and those that have appeared in an exam say which exam and year. Start with Polity and modern history, then Geography, the Economy and Science. Read a note, take its topic quiz, and come back to it in your monthly revision.

UPSC GK Questions with Answers

Q13381.GeographyMedium

Which is the largest brackish-water lagoon in India?

  1. A.Vembanad Lake
  2. B.Chilika Lake
  3. C.Pulicat Lake
  4. D.Kolleru Lake
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Chilika Lake

Chilika lies on the Utkal coast of Odisha, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long sandbar, and it is the largest brackish-water lagoon in India, famous for its migratory birds and for its population of Irrawaddy dolphins.

Q13386.GeographyAsked in: SSC GD Constable · 11 Feb 2019, Shift 2Easy

Which state has the largest coast line?

  1. A.Karnataka
  2. B.Kerala
  3. C.Tamil Nadu
  4. D.Gujarat
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Gujarat

Gujarat has the longest coastline of any Indian state. Its shore runs from the Rann of Kachchh round the Gulf of Kachchh, along the whole Saurashtra or Kathiawar peninsula and down the Gulf of Khambhat, and this deeply indented outline gives it far more shore than any other state.

Q13387.General ScienceMedium

What is the shape of a methane molecule?

  1. A.Linear
  2. B.Trigonal planar
  3. C.Tetrahedral
  4. D.Pyramidal
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Tetrahedral

In methane the carbon atom is joined to four hydrogen atoms by four single bonds and has no lone pair, so the four bonding pairs push one another as far apart as possible and point to the corners of a regular tetrahedron, with bond angles of about 109.5 degrees.

Q13391.General ScienceEasy

A chemical bond formed by the complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another is called a:

  1. A.Covalent bond
  2. B.Ionic bond
  3. C.Coordinate bond
  4. D.Hydrogen bond
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ionic bond

In an ionic or electrovalent bond a metal atom loses one or more electrons to a non-metal atom; the metal becomes a positive ion and the non-metal a negative ion, and the electrostatic attraction between the two holds the compound together, as in sodium chloride and magnesium oxide.

Which of the following is used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation of vegetable oil?

  1. A.Pb
  2. B.Ni
  3. C.H2
  4. D.He
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ni

Vegetable oils contain unsaturated fatty acids with carbon-carbon double bonds, and when hydrogen is passed through the oil at about 60 degrees Celsius in the presence of finely divided nickel, the double bonds add hydrogen and become saturated, turning the liquid oil into semi-solid vanaspati.

Which of the following is an amphoteric oxide?

  1. A.Aluminium oxide
  2. B.Iron (II) oxide
  3. C.Magnesium oxide
  4. D.Carbon dioxide
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Aluminium oxide

An amphoteric oxide reacts with both acids and bases to give a salt and water. Aluminium oxide dissolves in hydrochloric acid to give aluminium chloride and in sodium hydroxide to give sodium aluminate, so it behaves as a base in one case and as an acid in the other.

Which among the following compounds has a double bond?

  1. A.Ethane
  2. B.Methane
  3. C.Acetylene
  4. D.Ethylene
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Ethylene

Ethylene, also called ethene, has the formula C2H4, and its two carbon atoms share two pairs of electrons, which is a carbon-carbon double bond made of one sigma and one pi bond; it is the simplest alkene.

Q13396.General ScienceAsked in: RRB ALP · 29 Aug 2018, Shift 2Medium

Which of the following is NOT a double displacement reaction?

  1. A.BaCl2 + H2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2HCl
  2. B.2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
  3. C.CuSO4 + H2S → CuS + H2SO4
  4. D.NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

In a double displacement reaction two compounds exchange their ions, so both reactants must be compounds. Here hydrogen and oxygen are elements combining to form a single product, water, which makes it a combination reaction and also a combustion and redox reaction, but certainly not a double displacement.

Q13399.Environment & EcologyMedium

The Namami Gange Programme is implemented by which body?

  1. A.Central Pollution Control Board
  2. B.National Mission for Clean Ganga
  3. C.Central Water Commission
