UPSC Civil Services GK Questions 2026

Static general knowledge is six of the seven lines of the General Studies Paper-I syllabus in the UPSC CSE notice: History of India and the Indian National Movement; Indian and World Geography; Indian Polity and Governance; Economic and Social Development; Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change; and General Science. The Commission tests understanding rather than recall, through statements to be judged correct or incorrect, pairs to be matched and assertion-reason items, and it likes the edges of a topic: a lesser-known provision of the Constitution, a river's tributary, a species' conservation status, the mandate of a statutory body. This page holds GK24's topic-wise GK notes for UPSC, written as short facts and tables, in English and Hindi, with each note linked to the current affairs and previous-year questions on the same topic. Start with Polity and Modern History, which carry the most questions, then Geography, the Economy, Environment, Ancient and Medieval culture and Science. Read a note, solve its PYQs, take its quiz, and come back to it in your monthly revision. A candidate who knows these notes and reads the daily current affairs has covered the syllabus the notice prescribes for Paper-I.

Q13443.General ScienceMedium

The formation of a mirage on a hot road is caused by:

  1. A.Reflection from the road surface
  2. B.Dispersion of sunlight
  3. C.Total internal reflection after refraction in air layers
  4. D.Scattering by dust particles
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Total internal reflection after refraction in air layers

On a hot day the air touching the road is heated and becomes rarer than the cooler air above it.

Q13444.General ScienceMedium

The power of a convex lens of focal length 50 cm is:

  1. A.+0.5 dioptre
  2. B.+2 dioptre
  3. C.-2 dioptre
  4. D.+50 dioptre
Show answer
Correct answer: B. +2 dioptre

The power of a lens is the reciprocal of its focal length expressed in metres, that is P equals 1 divided by f. Fifty centimetres is 0.5 metre, and the reciprocal of 0.5 is 2, so the power is two dioptres.

  3. C.speeds up and bends away from the normal
  4. D.speeds up and bends towards the normal
Show answer
Correct answer: B. slows down and bends towards the normal
