RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

Which of the following statements is correct about litmus solution?

  1. A.Litmus solution is a purple dye, which is extracted from moss.
  2. B.Litmus solution is an orange dye, which is extracted from lichen.
  3. C.Litmus solution is a purple dye, which is extracted from lichen.
  4. D.Litmus solution is an orange dye, which is extracted from moss.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Litmus solution is a purple dye, which is extracted from lichen.

Litmus is a natural indicator obtained from lichens, which are a partnership between an alga and a fungus, and in a neutral solution it shows a purple colour.

What is the formula of cyclohexane?

  1. A.C6H12
  2. B.C6H14
  3. C.C6H6
  4. D.C6H10
Show answer
Correct answer: A. C6H12

Cyclohexane is a closed ring of six carbon atoms joined by single bonds, and each carbon carries two hydrogen atoms, which gives C6H12.

Which of the following belongs to the alkyne group?

  1. A.C3H4
  2. B.C2H4
  3. C.C3H8
  4. D.C6H6
Show answer
Correct answer: A. C3H4

C3H4 is propyne, and it fits the alkyne general formula CnH2n-2 when n equals 3. Alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons that carry at least one carbon-to-carbon triple bond, and the first member of the family is ethyne, C2H2, better known as acetylene and burnt with oxygen in welding torches.

Which of the following represents alkenes?

  1. A.—C = C—
  2. B.—C—C—
  3. C.H—O—H
  4. D.O = C = O
Show answer
Correct answer: A. —C = C—

An alkene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon in which two carbon atoms are joined by a double bond, so the carbon-to-carbon double bond is its identity.

Q309.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 31 Oct 2018, Shift 2Medium

Where are the elements of the d-block found?

  1. A.Only the 18th group
  2. B.Only the elements of group 8
  3. C.The 9th group elements
  4. D.Between the 2nd and the 13th group (groups 3 to 12)
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Between the 2nd and the 13th group (groups 3 to 12)

The d-block sits in the middle of the periodic table, bridging the s-block on the left and the p-block on the right.

Q311.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 31 Oct 2018, Shift 2Easy

Alkenes, unsaturated hydrocarbons containing a double bond between two carbon atoms, have a general formula, which is:

  1. A.CnH2n+2
  2. B.CnH2n-1
  3. C.CnH2n+1
  4. D.CnH2n
Show answer
Correct answer: D. CnH2n

An alkene carries one carbon-to-carbon double bond, and that bond uses up two hydrogen atoms that a saturated chain would have held, so the formula drops from CnH2n+2 to CnH2n. Putting n equal to 2 gives C2H4, ethene, the simplest alkene; n equal to 3 gives C3H6, propene.

Q312.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 16 Oct 2018, Shift 1Easy

The general formula of alkane is:

  1. A.CnH2n-2
  2. B.CnH2n+2
  3. C.CnH3n-3
  4. D.CnH2n
Show answer
Correct answer: B. CnH2n+2

Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons in which carbon atoms are joined only by single bonds, and such a chain carries the largest possible number of hydrogen atoms, given by CnH2n+2.

Q314.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 04 Feb 2026, Shift 1Easy

Which of the following is a characteristic property of ionic compounds?

  1. A.Strong electrostatic forces between ions
  2. B.Low melting point
  3. C.Insoluble in water
  4. D.Poor electrical conductivity in molten state
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Strong electrostatic forces between ions

An ionic compound is a lattice of positive and negative ions held by strong electrostatic attraction, and that force explains all its other properties.

Q315.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 14 Dec 2025, Shift 3Easy

Covalent bonds are formed by:

  1. A.Sharing of electrons
  2. B.Loss of protons
  3. C.Transfer of electrons
  4. D.Gain of neutrons
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Sharing of electrons

A covalent bond is formed when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons so that each completes its outermost shell.

Q317.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 02 Feb 2026, Shift 3Easy

Which of the following is NOT a property of ionic compounds?

  1. A.They generally have high melting and boiling points.
  2. B.They are generally solid at room temperature.
  3. C.They can conduct electricity in an aqueous/molten state.
  4. D.They are soluble in solvents such as kerosene and petrol.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. They are soluble in solvents such as kerosene and petrol.

Ionic compounds dissolve well in water but not in kerosene, petrol or other non-polar organic solvents, so this statement is not a property of theirs.

The melting point of ice is:

  1. A.-273 C
  2. B.273 K
  3. C.273 C
  4. D.-273 K
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 273 K

Ice melts at 0 degrees Celsius, and 0 degrees Celsius is 273 K on the Kelvin scale. To change Celsius into Kelvin, add 273 to the Celsius reading, so 0 + 273 gives 273 K; the melting point of ice is usually written as 273.15 K in exact work.
