With reference to the territorial jurisdictions of High Courts in India, consider the following pairs : High Courts — Territorial Jurisdictions I. Calcutta High Court — Lakshadweep II. Madras High Court — Puducherry III. Gauhati High Court — Manipur IV. Kerala High Court — Andaman and Nicobar Islands How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?

  1. A.One
  2. B.Two
  3. C.Three
  4. D.All the four

Correct answer

A. One

Explanation

The correct answer is A, One. Only pair II is correct: the Madras High Court has jurisdiction over Puducherry.

Under Article 231, Parliament can set up a common High Court for two or more states and Union Territories. The Madras High Court covers Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Kerala High Court at Kochi covers Kerala and Lakshadweep, while the Calcutta High Court covers West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with a circuit bench at Port Blair. Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura got their own High Courts in March 2013, so the Gauhati High Court now serves Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

B is wrong because only one pair is right; pairs I and IV have Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands swapped between the Calcutta and Kerala High Courts. C and D are wrong for the same reason, and also because Manipur has had its own High Court since 2013, so pair III is wrong too.

Exam tip: Kerala HC = Lakshadweep; Calcutta HC = Andaman and Nicobar; Madras HC = Puducherry; Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura HCs = 2013.
