Which one of the following is correct in respect of total number of States and Union Territories in India?

  1. A.28 States and 8 Union Territories
  2. B.27 States and 9 Union Territories
  3. C.30 States and 6 Union Territories
  4. D.29 States and 7 Union Territories

Correct answer

A. 28 States and 8 Union Territories

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 28 States and 8 Union Territories. India has had 28 States and 8 Union Territories since 26 January 2020.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 turned the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, from 31 October 2019. That left 28 States and 9 Union Territories. Then, on 26 January 2020, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged into one Union Territory, bringing the number to 8. Parliament makes such changes under Articles 2, 3 and 4 of the Constitution. The eight are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.

B is wrong because India has never had 27 States with 9 Union Territories. C is wrong because there have never been 30 States. D is wrong because 29 States and 7 Union Territories was the position before August 2019, after Telangana was formed in 2014.

Exam tip: Telangana 2014 made 29 States; J&K reorganised 31 Oct 2019; DNH and DD merged 26 Jan 2020: now 28 States, 8 UTs.
