The highest sporting honour of India, earlier called the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, was renamed in 2021 after whom?
- A.Major Dhyan Chand
- B.K. D. Singh Babu
- C.Milkha Singh
- D.Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
Correct answer
Explanation
The correct answer is A, Major Dhyan Chand. In 2021 the award for the most outstanding sporting performance was renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, so his name now attaches to two national honours, this one and the older Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement. Option B is wrong because K. D. Singh Babu, the Olympic gold medallist from Barabanki, is remembered in the name of the Lucknow stadium and not of a national award. Option C is wrong because Milkha Singh, the sprinter, has no national award named after him. Option D is wrong but names a real trophy of a different kind: the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy is given to the university with the best overall performance in sports. The other national awards are the Arjuna for consistent performance and the Dronacharya for coaches.
