The Elysee Palace is the official residence of the head of state of which country?
- A.Italy
- B.France
- C.Germany
- D.Belgium
Correct answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, France. The Elysee Palace in Paris has been the official residence and working office of the President of the French Republic since the middle of the nineteenth century, and the French Prime Minister, who is the head of government, works separately from the Hotel Matignon. A question that asks for the head of state therefore points to the Elysee, not to Matignon.
Option A is wrong because Italy's President lives at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, while its Prime Minister sits at Palazzo Chigi. Option C is wrong because the President of Germany lives at Bellevue Palace in Berlin and the Chancellor in the Federal Chancellery. Option D is wrong because Belgium is a monarchy whose King uses the Royal Palace of Brussels and the Palace of Laeken, and no building there is called the Elysee.
