How many Delimitation Commissions have been constituted by the Government of India till December 2023 ?

  1. A.One
  2. B.Two
  3. C.Three
  4. D.Four

Correct answer

D. Four

Explanation

The correct answer is D, Four. Delimitation Commissions were set up in 1952, 1963, 1973 and 2002.

Under Article 82, Parliament readjusts Lok Sabha seats after each census, and under Article 170 the same is done for State Assemblies. For this, Parliament passed Delimitation Commission Acts in 1952, 1962, 1972 and 2002, and a commission was formed under each. The commission is a high-powered body whose orders have the force of law and cannot be challenged in any court. The fourth commission, set up in 2002 under Justice Kuldip Singh, redrew constituency boundaries on the basis of the 2001 Census, but the number of seats in each State stayed frozen at the 1971 level. The 84th Amendment of 2001 extended this freeze until the first census taken after 2026.

A, B and C are wrong because they undercount: four commissions had been formed by December 2023, in 1952, 1963, 1973 and 2002.

Exam tip: Four Delimitation Commissions: 1952, 1963, 1973, 2002 (Justice Kuldip Singh); seats frozen at 1971 levels.
