Consider the following statements about gallantry awards in India: 1. Post-independence, first three gallantry awards were instituted on 26th January, 1950. 2. The first three gallantry awards were Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Ashoka Chakra Class-II and Ashoka Chakra Class-III. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.Both 1 and 2
  4. D.Neither 1 nor 2

Correct answer

A. 1 only

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 1 only. The first three gallantry awards of independent India were instituted on 26 January 1950, but they were the Param Vir Chakra, the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra.

These three wartime awards, for gallantry in the face of the enemy, were instituted by the Government of India on Republic Day 1950 with effect from 15 August 1947, so the heroes of the 1947–48 Kashmir operations could receive them. The Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Class-II and Class-III, for gallantry other than in the face of the enemy, came later, on 4 January 1952. In 1967 they were renamed the Ashoka Chakra, the Kirti Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra.

B is wrong because statement 2 names the peacetime series, which was created in 1952, not the first three awards. C is wrong because statement 2 is false. D is wrong because statement 1 is true.

Exam tip: 1950 gave PVC, MVC and VrC; 1952 gave Ashoka Chakra Class I–III, renamed Ashoka, Kirti and Shaurya Chakra in 1967.
