Consider the following statements : 1. Most of the world's coral reefs are in tropical waters. 2. More than one-third of the world's coral reefs are located in the territories of Australia, Indonesia and Philippines. 3. Coral reefs host far more number of animal phyla than those hosted by tropical rainforests. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. A.1 and 2 only
  2. B.3 only
  3. C.1 and 3 only
  4. D.1, 2 and 3

Correct answer

D. 1, 2 and 3

Explanation

The correct answer is D, 1, 2 and 3. All three statements about coral reefs are correct. Reef-building corals need warm, clear, shallow water, roughly between 20 °C and 30 °C, so almost all reefs lie in the tropics between about 30° N and 30° S. Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines together hold well over a third of the world's reef area, and the Coral Triangle around Indonesia and the Philippines has the greatest coral diversity on Earth. Reefs cover less than one per cent of the ocean floor, yet they host about a quarter of all marine species, and far more animal phyla are found on reefs than in tropical rainforests, where insects and other arthropods dominate. Option A is wrong because it leaves out the true statement 3. Option B is wrong because it leaves out statements 1 and 2. Option C is wrong because it leaves out statement 2. Exam tip: Coral reefs are the 'rainforests of the sea'; the largest reef nations are Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines.
