Along with Pranab Mukherjee, how many more persons were conferred the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 2019 ?

  1. A.One
  2. B.Two
  3. C.Three
  4. D.Four

Correct answer

B. Two

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Two. The Bharat Ratna for 2019 went to three people: former President Pranab Mukherjee, social reformer Nanaji Deshmukh and singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika, so two others were honoured along with him.

The awards were announced on the eve of Republic Day in January 2019. Nanaji Deshmukh, who worked for rural development through the Deendayal Research Institute and founded the Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, and Bhupen Hazarika, the Assamese singer, lyricist and film-maker, were honoured posthumously. Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th President of India, received his award in person in August 2019. The Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award, instituted in 1954.

A is wrong: one would leave out either Nanaji Deshmukh or Bhupen Hazarika. C is wrong: three others would make four awardees, more than were given in 2019. D is wrong: four others would make five, which did not happen in 2019.

Exam tip: Bharat Ratna 2019 = Pranab Mukherjee, Nanaji Deshmukh and Bhupen Hazarika; the last two posthumously.
