Why in News

On 8 October 2026 the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy marked World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi, and released a report on gaps in India's hydrogen standards prepared with Boston Consulting Group.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) marked World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day on 8 October 2026 with an event at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan in New Delhi. More than 100 government officials, industry representatives, researchers and subject experts took part, and the day stayed on a single question: what standards and safeguards India needs in place before hydrogen comes into wide use.

Two panels, on standards and on safety

The programme was built around two panel discussions, the first on standards for hydrogen and the second on safety at hydrogen facilities. Speakers came from the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), the Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) and other research and industry organisations. Three demands ran through both sessions: written standards covering how the gas is produced, stored, moved and used; stronger testing arrangements and training so that workers can handle it safely; and closer coordination between government agencies, industry and experts.

A gap assessment released

A report titled 'India's Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework', prepared in association with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), was released at the event. It takes stock of the hydrogen standards the country already has, marks the areas that still need attention and sets out the steps required to close those gaps.

Who spoke

Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, was the chief guest at the valedictory session. Akash Tripathi, Managing Director of the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), delivered the special address, and Mohammad Rihan, Director General of the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), also addressed the gathering. Abhay Bakre, Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, gave the opening remarks, and Sujit Pillai, a Scientist F in the ministry, the vote of thanks.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission behind it

The event sits inside the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which the government approved in January 2023 with an outlay of 19,744 crore rupees. The mission is meant to turn India into a global hub for making, using and exporting green hydrogen and the products derived from it, and it carries a target of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production a year by 2030. Its money is spread across production, the manufacture of equipment, pilot projects, research and training. The standards work discussed at the event is the groundwork that this build-out needs, since hydrogen is a light, highly flammable gas and the rules for handling it have to be settled before plants, pipelines and refuelling points multiply.

Exam Point of View

Remember the day (World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day), the ministry (New and Renewable Energy), the venue (Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi), the report released ('India's Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework', with BCG), the chief guest (Principal Scientific Adviser Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood) and the National Green Hydrogen Mission's figures: approved January 2023, outlay 19,744 crore rupees, target 5 million metric tonnes a year by 2030.

Practice Questions

Q1.Important DaysMedium

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy held its World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day 2026 event at which venue in New Delhi?

  1. A.Bharat Mandapam
  2. B.Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan
  3. C.Vigyan Bhawan
  4. D.Yashobhoomi
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan

Explanation

The correct answer is Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, the New Delhi building that houses the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the venue where the ministry marked World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day. More than a hundred officials, industry representatives, researchers and experts attended two panel discussions there, one on standards for hydrogen and one on safety at hydrogen facilities, and a gap assessment of the country's hydrogen standards was released. Option A is wrong because Bharat Mandapam is the convention centre at Pragati Maidan and had no part in this event. Option C is wrong because Vigyan Bhawan, though a common venue for scientific conferences in the capital, was not used. Option D is wrong because Yashobhoomi, the convention centre at Dwarka, hosted other events and not this one. The valedictory session was attended by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Q2.Important DaysEasy

What is the outlay of the National Green Hydrogen Mission?

  1. A.Rs 9,744 crore
  2. B.Rs 15,744 crore
  3. C.Rs 19,744 crore
  4. D.Rs 29,744 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Rs 19,744 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is Rs 19,744 crore. The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved in January 2023 with this outlay, and the money is spread across production of the gas, the manufacture of equipment, pilot projects, research and training. The mission's purpose is to make India a global hub for producing, using and exporting green hydrogen and the products derived from it, and it carries a production target of 5 million metric tonnes a year by 2030. Options A, B and D are wrong because none of those amounts was sanctioned for the mission; they are near neighbours of the real figure and are easy to confuse with it in a question paper. The World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day event sat within this mission, and its Mission Director, Abhay Bakre, gave the opening remarks at the programme in New Delhi.

Q3.Important DaysMedium

Which report, prepared in association with Boston Consulting Group, was released on World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day 2026?

  1. A.India's Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework
  2. B.India Hydrogen Outlook
  3. C.Green Hydrogen Readiness Index
  4. D.National Fuel Cell Safety Report
Show answer
Correct answer: A. India's Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework

Explanation

The correct answer is India's Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework. Released at the ministry's World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day programme, the report reviews the hydrogen standards the country already has, points to the areas that still need attention and lists the steps needed to deal with them. Options B, C and D are wrong because no document by any of those names was released at the event; they are invented titles of the kind that sound plausible in this field. The subject matters because both panels at the event asked for written standards covering how hydrogen is produced, stored, transported and used, for better testing and training so that workers can handle the gas safely, and for closer coordination between government agencies, industry and experts. Representatives of CEEW, BIS, PNGRB, PESO and OISD joined those discussions.
