Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 Campaign: Theme, Dates and Pillars
Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 runs from 17 September to 2 October on the theme 'Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat' across ministries.

Why in News
Ministries and departments across the government reported their Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 activities on 22 September 2026, setting out the campaign's theme, its duration and its pillars.
The nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign is under way, and ministries across the government have begun their activities under it. The campaign is jointly organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, and it seeks to strengthen collective participation and volunteerism for cleanliness.
Theme and duration
This year's theme is 'Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat'. The Ministry of Textiles has said the campaign is being observed across its organisations from 17 September to 2 October 2026. The theme presents cleanliness as a collective effort and as a festival of community involvement, and the campaign as a whole aims at behavioural and cultural change rather than one-off cleaning drives.
Department of Food and Public Distribution
The Department of Food and Public Distribution has started the campaign with its public sector undertakings and attached offices, following the guidelines of the Department of Urban Development and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. Secretary Sanjeev Chopra administered the Swachhata pledge at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, followed by a cleanliness drive. The Department also held a slogan competition and a workshop for Safai Mitras on their wellbeing, health and social security, which form one of the six pillars of the campaign.
Activities across organisations
- Central Warehousing Corporation held cleanliness and beautification drives in Delhi and a painting competition at a school
- The Food Corporation of India began with the Swachhata pledge at its headquarters, regional and district offices and depots, and organised health check-up camps for Safai Mitras and their families
- Quality Control Cell offices held oath-taking ceremonies under Pillar-2, 'Swachh Paathshala - Yuva for Swachhata'
- The National Sugar Institute, Kanpur, and the Indian Grain Storage Management and Research Institute took the pledge and ran awareness programmes
- The Ministry of Textiles held a thematic art poster competition and set up standees and selfie points in offices
Health camp for Safai Mitras
Under the 'SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman Shivirs' component of the campaign, a preventive health check-up and consultation camp was organised at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, for officers and Safai Mitras of the Press Information Bureau, Delhi. It was held with Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, whose team of doctors examined and advised the participants.

Practice Questions
What is the theme of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign?
- A.Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat
- B.Sampoorna Swachhata
- C.Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata
- D.Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat
Explanation
The correct answer is Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat. Both the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the Ministry of Textiles named this as the theme of the current campaign, and described it as an appeal to treat cleanliness as a collective effort and a festival of community involvement. Option B is wrong because that phrase is not the theme announced for this edition. Option C is wrong because although it sounds close to the language used in such campaigns, it is not the theme named in these releases. Option D is wrong because it is a general slogan and not the theme declared for this year. Themes of national campaigns change every year, so aspirants should always link the theme to the year and to the campaign name together.
Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 is jointly organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and which other body?
- A.Department of Rural Development
- B.Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti
- C.Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
- D.Department of Health and Family Welfare
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti
Explanation
The correct answer is the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting release states plainly that the campaign is being organised jointly by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and that department, which together cover urban and rural sanitation. Option A is wrong because rural development is a separate department and was not named as an organiser. Option C is wrong because the environment ministry has no stated role in running this campaign. Option D is wrong because health and family welfare is not among the organisers, even though health camps are held for Safai Mitras during the campaign. The urban plus rural pairing is the logic to remember, since a national cleanliness campaign must reach both kinds of settlement.
Over which period is the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign being observed?
- A.1 September to 30 September
- B.15 August to 15 September
- C.17 September to 2 October
- D.2 October to 31 October
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 17 September to 2 October
Explanation
The correct answer is 17 September to 2 October. The Ministry of Textiles stated that the campaign is being celebrated across all its organisations over this period, and the activities reported by other departments, such as the Swachhata pledge taken on the opening day, fit the same window. The closing date is easy to remember because it falls on Gandhi Jayanti, the day the Swachh Bharat Mission itself is associated with. Option A is wrong because the campaign does not begin at the start of the month. Option B is wrong because that window belongs to a different period altogether and does not match the reported pledge dates. Option D is wrong because the campaign ends, rather than begins, in the first days of October. Fixing the start and close dates together is the safest way to answer such questions.
