India's First LNG-Powered Train Flagged Off at Sabarmati
Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off India's first LNG-powered train at Sabarmati and dedicated Gujarat railway works worth Rs 1,472 crore.

Why in News
On 27 September 2026 Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the country's first LNG-powered train at Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad and dedicated railway projects worth Rs 1,472 crore, including a WAG-12 maintenance shed.
India got its first LNG-powered train on 27 September 2026, when Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah sent it off from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. At the same function he dedicated finished works and laid foundation stones for new ones, together costing Rs 1,472 crore. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was present.
What Sabarmati received
- The country's first train running on liquefied natural gas, described as a step for cleaner rail travel.
- A WAG-12 maintenance shed for locomotive upkeep, built at a cost of Rs 700 crore.
- The Kavach train protection system on the Sabarmati-Kalol-Sabarmati section, costing Rs 48 crore.
- A start on Kavach for the Ahmedabad-Palanpur and Ahmedabad-Samakhiali sections, and on doubling the Sabarmati-Sarkhej line.
The new locomotive
A twin-section engine of 12,000 horsepower was put into service the same day. The minister said a single such machine hauls a load that would otherwise fill about 600 trucks, and that two locomotives used to be coupled for the same work.
Railway figures quoted at the event
| Diesel burnt by the railways in 2015-16 | 293 crore litres |
| Diesel burnt in 2024-25 | 108 crore litres |
| Track electrified during 2023-24 | 7,188 km |
| Share of network electrified now | 99.6 per cent |
| Gujarat rail outlay for 2026-27 | Rs 17,366 crore |
Electrification was only 30 per cent before 2014, he said, and the last 0.4 per cent of the network will be covered shortly. A corridor of 11,000 kilometres is being turned into a four-lane network to ease movement towards Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Guwahati. He also reported a successful trial of the first long-haul double-stack container train from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai to Vadodara, which he expects to roughly double freight capacity. For comparison he placed electrification at 92 per cent in China, 68 per cent in Spain, 60 per cent in France and 49 per cent in the United Kingdom, naming Sweden as the lone country at 100 per cent while noting its network is far shorter than India's. Gujarat's rail spending across 2009 to 2014, he added, came to Rs 589 crore in all.

Practice Questions
From which railway station was India's first LNG-powered train flagged off in September 2026?
- A.Ahmedabad Junction
- B.Sabarmati
- C.Vadodara
- D.Gandhinagar Capital
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Sabarmati
Explanation
The correct answer is Sabarmati. The first train in India to run on liquefied natural gas was sent on its way from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, by the Union Home and Cooperation Minister, who described the step as useful for protecting the environment. The same station also received a locomotive maintenance shed and the Kavach safety system on the section running to Kalol. Ahmedabad Junction is wrong because the works announced that day were grouped under the Sabarmati division and the flag-off itself took place at Sabarmati, not at the city's main junction. Vadodara is wrong: it was mentioned only as the destination of a trial run by a double-stack long-haul container train that began at the port in Mumbai. Gandhinagar Capital is wrong because no part of the day's announcements concerned that station; the doubling work taken up was on the line from Sabarmati to Sarkhej.
What was the total value of the railway works dedicated at Sabarmati along with the first LNG-powered train?
- A.Rs 700 crore
- B.Rs 1,472 crore
- C.Rs 589 crore
- D.Rs 17,366 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Rs 1,472 crore
Explanation
The correct answer is Rs 1,472 crore, the combined worth of the works opened and the foundation stones laid at Sabarmati on the day the first LNG-powered train was flagged off. Option A, Rs 700 crore, is only one part of that package: it is what the WAG-12 shed for maintaining locomotive engines cost. Option C, Rs 589 crore, is a very different figure, the total railway spending in Gujarat across the years from 2009 to 2014, quoted to contrast past and present outlays. Option D, Rs 17,366 crore, is the railway outlay for Gujarat in a single year, 2026-27, again used for that comparison and not the value of the Sabarmati works. Only option B answers what was asked, so B is right.
How much horsepower does the twin-section WAG-12 locomotive commissioned at Sabarmati have?
- A.6,000 horsepower
- B.9,000 horsepower
- C.12,000 horsepower
- D.15,000 horsepower
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 12,000 horsepower
Explanation
The correct answer is 12,000 horsepower. The engine put into service at Sabarmati is a twin-section machine of that rating, and it can pull on its own a load that would otherwise need roughly 600 trucks. Two locomotives used to be joined together for such a haul, so one WAG-12 now does the work of a pair, which the Home Minister called a landmark for Indian Railways. Options A and B, 6,000 and 9,000 horsepower, are lower ratings that do not match the machine described at the ceremony. Option D, 15,000 horsepower, is higher than the stated figure. A shed costing Rs 700 crore was opened at the same station precisely to maintain locomotive engines of this class, which is why the number is worth remembering with the shed.
Diesel consumption by Indian Railways came down to how many crore litres in 2024-25, according to the figures cited at Sabarmati?
- A.293 crore litres
- B.205 crore litres
- C.150 crore litres
- D.108 crore litres
Show answer
Correct answer: D. 108 crore litres
Explanation
The correct answer is 108 crore litres. The Home Minister said the railways burnt 293 crore litres of diesel in 2015-16 and that the quantity had come down to 108 crore litres by 2024-25, a fall he linked to the spread of electric traction and one he felt received little notice. Option A, 293 crore litres, is the earlier of the two figures, for 2015-16, so it names the starting point rather than the later year. Options B and C, 205 and 150 crore litres, are neither of the two quantities quoted. The same speech put the share of the network already electrified at 99.6 per cent, with the small remainder to be finished soon, which explains why diesel use has shrunk so sharply.
