Why in News

On 25 October 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India data centre and the cyber security training institute at Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in the presence of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two new facilities of the Reserve Bank of India at Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, on 25 October 2026. The two units are an RBI data centre and a cyber security training institute. Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister said Bhubaneswar was giving the country a new institution, and congratulated the central bank and everyone attached to the project.

Who was on the dais

The Prime Minister greeted Odisha Governor Brajamohan Ram, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Jual Oram, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and Deputy Chief Ministers Pravati Parida and Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, besides guests from the banking and financial sector.

Why the two facilities matter

The Prime Minister argued that the last decade carried banking to people who had been left out of it, while the coming decade must make banking more efficient and more dependable. Keeping the banking system safe, he said, means keeping its digital backbone safe, which calls for sturdy data centres and strong computing systems. He added that a country can now be weakened by an attack on its economy rather than by weapons, that the nature of cyber threats keeps shifting, and that old training systems and old tools cannot answer them. Modern infrastructure and trained people are both needed, which is the role he set out for the new cyber security institute.

Financial inclusion figures quoted

  • Close to 59 to 60 crore Jan Dhan accounts now let the whole of a rupee released from Delhi land in a beneficiary account, against the 15 paise a former Prime Minister had once spoken of from Odisha.
  • Mudra Yojana turned 13 crore people into entrepreneurs for the first time.
  • Self-help groups of 10 crore rural women drew bank support worth thousands of crores of rupees.
  • PM SVANidhi gave street vendors their first loan, and PM Vishwakarma linked skilled artisans to banks.

PM Suraksha Bima YojanaCover of up to 2 lakh rupees on a yearly premium of 20 rupees

Odisha as a technology base

The Prime Minister placed eastern India as a growth engine for a developed country and said Odisha now draws strength from technology as well as from its minerals. Alongside the spread of mineral-based industry, work is on to build a semiconductor and electronics ecosystem, and he said the state would write a new future running from mines to microchips. Fresh room for investment in data centres and advanced computing, he told young people of the state, would open many doors for them.
