Why in News

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2026 was observed on 1 October 2026 at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, on the theme "One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.", with State Blood Transfusion Councils felicitated for their collection record.

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day (NVBDD) was observed on 1 October 2026 at the Swarn Jayanti Auditorium of Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi. The day falls on 1 October every year and is used to urge healthy, eligible people to give blood regularly, without payment and of their own will. The theme this year was "One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives."

Who organised it

The national observance was arranged by the Blood Transfusion Services Division of the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, together with Lady Hardinge Medical College and its associated hospitals. Dr M. Srinivas, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, presided over the programme and opened the blood donation camp held as part of it. Dr Loveneesh G. Krishna, Director General of Health Services, and Dr Himani Ahluwalia, Director of LHMC, also addressed the gathering.

What was said

Dr Srinivas noted that about 75 per cent of the blood collected in the country now comes from voluntary donors, and asked the government, hospitals, non-government bodies and youth organisations to close the gap that still remains between demand and supply. He pressed for rational use of blood components and for awareness that reaches beyond donation to nutrition and anaemia, especially among women and adolescent girls. Dr Krishna listed the steps taken to strengthen transfusion services: the National Blood Policy, quality assurance systems, the e-RaktKosh portal for donor registration and monitoring, national technical guidelines and communication campaigns. Dr Ahluwalia said LHMC gives free treatment and transfusion support to about 700 registered thalassemia patients, among the largest such services in a government hospital in the country.

North-Eastern StatesMizoram first, Sikkim second
Union TerritoriesChandigarh first, Delhi second

State Blood Transfusion Councils were felicitated for their collection record in 2025. Among the organisations honoured for their work were Thalassaemics India, the Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad, All India Radio and the Indian Red Cross Society.

The nationwide campaign

The observance is part of a Nationwide Mega Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign running from 17 September to 2 October 2026, in which state health departments, blood centres, colleges, government departments and voluntary groups are taking part. The campaign leans on youth participation and Jan Bhagidari, uses the e-RaktKosh portal for registration and monitoring, and carries the donation pledge on digital platforms including MyGov. The programme at LHMC included a street play by students, the administering of the donation pledge, felicitation of states and organisations, and the singing of the National Song and the National Anthem.

Practice Questions

Q1.Important DaysEasy

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is observed in India on which date every year?

  1. A.1 October
  2. B.14 June
  3. C.1 December
  4. D.7 April
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 1 October

Explanation

The correct answer is 1 October. The day is observed on this date every year to spread awareness about voluntary blood donation and to encourage healthy, eligible people to donate regularly and without payment. The national observance for the year was held at the Swarn Jayanti Auditorium of Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi. Option B, 14 June, is a strong distractor because it marks the global observance for blood donors, not this national one, so read the question carefully to see whether the national or the world day is being asked. Option C, 1 December, is associated with a different health observance altogether. Option D, 7 April, marks the day of global health and is again a separate occasion. Keep the national day and the world day apart in memory, and remember this year’s theme, "One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives."

Q2.Important DaysMedium

What was the theme of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2026?

  1. A.Give Blood, Keep the World Beating
  2. B.One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.
  3. C.Safe Blood for All
  4. D.Blood Connects Us All
Show answer

Correct answer: B. One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.

Explanation

The correct answer is "One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives." The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare set this theme for the observance, and officials explained that it points to the humanitarian spirit behind donation and calls on eligible citizens, particularly the young, to come forward. The other three options read like donation slogans and are placed to test whether the exact wording has been noted, because a theme question is usually answered word for word. At the same observance it was said that about 75 per cent of the blood collected in the country now comes from voluntary donors, that the e-RaktKosh portal is used for donor registration and monitoring, and that Lady Hardinge Medical College provides free treatment and transfusion support to about 700 registered thalassemia patients, among the largest such services in a government hospital.

Q3.Important DaysMedium

Which state secured the first position among the North-Eastern States for blood collection in 2025?

  1. A.Sikkim
  2. B.Mizoram
  3. C.Assam
  4. D.Manipur
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Mizoram

Explanation

The correct answer is Mizoram. State Blood Transfusion Councils were felicitated at the national observance for their record in blood collection, and among the North-Eastern States, Mizoram stood first with Sikkim in the second position. Option A, Sikkim, is therefore the closest wrong answer, since it took second place in the same group and a hurried reading can swap the two. Options C and D, Assam and Manipur, are also North-Eastern States but were not among those placed first or second in this group. For the full picture, remember the other two groups as well: Chandigarh came first among the Union Territories with Delhi second, while among the remaining States Haryana was first, Uttarakhand second and Punjab third. Organisations honoured on the occasion included Thalassaemics India, All India Radio and the Indian Red Cross Society.
