Why in News

On 1 November 2026 the National Zoological Park in New Delhi completed 67 years, marking the day with a doodle activity for visitors and the 19th edition of its Sunday Bird Walk.

The National Zoological Park (NZP), New Delhi, which works under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, marked its 67th Foundation Day on 1 November 2026. A doodle activity was held for visitors, and about 1,500 visitors took part in it or appreciated it. The activity was meant in particular for children and families, giving them a creative way to connect with the protection of wildlife.

What the Director said

Dr. Sanjeet Kumar, Director of the National Zoological Park, called the anniversary a milestone and an occasion to renew the commitment to wildlife conservation, animal welfare, protection of biodiversity and public engagement. A modern zoo, he said, is not merely a place to look at animals but a centre for conservation, learning, research and inspiration, and every visitor, especially every child, can become an ambassador for nature.

The 19th Sunday Bird Walk

On the same morning the park held the 19th edition of 'Sunday Bird Walk @ NZP', from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM, guided by the ornithologist Dr. Paritosh Ahmed with the help of volunteers.

The expert explained the ecology and behaviour of birds and their role in keeping the ecological balance, including natural pest control, and their value as indicators of the health of an ecosystem.

How to join

Each walk is kept to 20 to 25 participants so that the learning stays useful. Prior registration is compulsory and places go on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration form stays open from Monday to Friday each week, and the link is put up on the official website of the park and on the NZP Saathi mobile application.

Why it matters

The Director said nature walks sharpen field-identification skills, deepen the understanding of ecological relationships and food webs, support the documentation of biodiversity and build a lasting regard for wildlife conservation.
