Cabinet Opens Path for All Agniveers to Become Regular Soldiers
The Union Cabinet created a pathway absorbing all Agniveers in the Defence Forces: 25 per cent as regulars on merit and the rest given two more years.

Why in News
On 4 November 2026 the Union Cabinet created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Defence Forces, adding a second engagement period of two years for those not taken as regulars.
The Union Cabinet on 4 November 2026 cleared a pathway under which every Agniveer can be absorbed into the Defence Forces. The decision follows an assessment of four years of the Agnipath Scheme and the performance of Agniveers in service.
What the Cabinet decided
- As already envisaged, 25 per cent of Agniveers will be offered regular employment in the Defence Forces on merit.
- For the remaining 75 per cent, another engagement period of two years has been approved, on the recommendation of the Indian Defence Forces and based on each Agniveer's willingness.
- After that two-year period, all Agniveers will be offered enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to their willingness and to their meeting the selection criteria.
Terms of the second engagement
The fresh engagement period carries higher remuneration, a larger Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits. The government says the step was taken after deliberate and detailed evaluation, with the aim of bringing the aspirations of Agniveers in line with the efficiency the services need.
How the Agniveers were judged
An objective assessment against organisational requirements and operational efficiency found the performance of Agniveers outstanding in skills, levels of motivation, physical fitness and command of technology.
What four years of Agnipath delivered
The feedback collected after four years of the scheme listed several gains: recruitment of Agniveers spread across more districts of the country; a recruitment process that is more standardised and transparent; very high physical fitness, morale, motivation, competitive spirit and discipline; better skills, technological adaptability and education during service; and the opening of several branches of the Defence Forces to women. On the strength of these, the Agnipath Scheme will continue.
Why it matters
Until now only a quarter of each Agniveer batch could expect a regular career. With an extra engagement period followed by enrolment of all willing and eligible Agniveers as regular soldiers, the Cabinet has in effect built a route for the whole cohort into permanent service.
