Why in News

On 9 October 2026 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented the SIDM Champion Awards 2026 in New Delhi and announced that India’s defence exports had reached a record ₹38,424 crore in the financial year 2025-26.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh handed over the SIDM Champion Awards 2026 at the eighth annual session of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers in New Delhi on 9 October 2026. Fifteen awards were given to companies for work in indigenous technology, product innovation, design, import substitution, quality of manufacturing and exports.

A record export figure

The minister told the industry that India sold defence goods worth ₹38,424 crore abroad in the financial year 2025-26. That is the highest the country has ever recorded and a jump of more than 60 per cent over the previous year. He restated the goal of taking defence exports to ₹50,000 crore by 2029, and called the shift from being a large buyer of foreign weapons to a dependable seller of advanced military equipment the sector’s most striking gain.

A bigger share for private firms

Mr Singh recalled his earlier appeal to lift the private sector’s slice of total defence production from about 24 per cent to 50 per cent. Private output, he said, had risen sharply over the last 12 years, and he asked company heads to fix step-by-step milestones of their own. The government, he assured them, would keep backing the industry while holding firm on regulation, safety, quality and accountability.

Technology and the ability to scale up

Wars today, the minister observed, turn on technology: drones, missiles, air defence systems and fast-changing software and communication tools. Money spent on research and development, he argued, should be read as an investment that lifts readiness, sharpens competitiveness and feeds national security. Pointing to Operation Sindoor, he said factories at home must be able to raise output quickly whenever the forces need it.

About SIDM

Founded in 2017, SIDM speaks for big companies, MSMEs, startups, academic institutions and foreign original equipment makers on one platform. The session’s theme was “Sovereign Capabilities, Contested Frontiers”, on India’s strategic autonomy in a disrupted world. The minister listed the Defence Acquisition Procedure, the Defence Procurement Manual, the Positive Indigenisation Lists, the SRIJAN portal and iDEX as the reforms built to widen private capability. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Director General (Acquisition) A. Anbarasu, SIDM Founder President Baba Kalyani and SIDM President Arun Ramchandani were present.

Practice Questions

Q1.DefenceMedium

India’s defence exports in the financial year 2025-26 stood at a record figure of about:

  1. A.₹21,083 crore
  2. B.₹38,424 crore
  3. C.₹45,600 crore
  4. D.₹52,900 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: B. ₹38,424 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is ₹38,424 crore. Speaking at the eighth annual session of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers in New Delhi, the Defence Minister said exports of defence goods had touched this figure in the financial year 2025-26, the highest India has ever reached, and that the rise over the preceding year was more than 60 per cent. Option A is wrong because no such figure was given for the year in question. Option C is wrong as well; it sits between the achieved figure and the target but matches neither. Option D is wrong because it crosses the goal the minister himself described as still ahead, namely ₹50,000 crore of defence exports by the year 2029. Aspirants should hold on to three linked numbers from this event: the achievement of ₹38,424 crore, the growth of over 60 per cent, and the target of ₹50,000 crore by 2029.

Q2.DefenceEasy

By which year does India aim to reach defence exports of ₹50,000 crore?

  1. A.2027
  2. B.2028
  3. C.2029
  4. D.2032
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 2029

Explanation

The correct answer is 2029. While giving away the SIDM Champion Awards, the Defence Minister repeated the target of lifting India’s defence exports to ₹50,000 crore by that year. The context makes the target easy to fix in memory: exports had just reached a record ₹38,424 crore in the financial year 2025-26, so the goal is a little over the level already achieved. Options A and B are wrong because the target year stated was neither of them, and option D is wrong because it is far later than the year named. Candidates should also recall the companion goal set out in the same speech, which is to raise the private sector’s share of the country’s total defence production from roughly 24 per cent to 50 per cent, a shift the minister said had already gained pace over the last dozen years.

Q3.DefenceMedium

The Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), whose Champion Awards were presented in October 2026, was established in:

  1. A.2011
  2. B.2014
  3. C.2017
  4. D.2020
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 2017

Explanation

The correct answer is 2017. SIDM was set up in that year and has since grown into a common platform for large defence enterprises, micro, small and medium enterprises, startups, academic institutions and foreign original equipment manufacturers. At its eighth annual session the Defence Minister acknowledged the body’s part in building the domestic defence industrial base and in carrying industry views into policy discussion. Options A, B and D are wrong because none of them is the year of the organisation’s founding. For the examination hall, pair the founding year with the reforms the minister credited for widening private capability: the Defence Acquisition Procedure, the Defence Procurement Manual, the Positive Indigenisation Lists, the SRIJAN portal and Innovations for Defence Excellence, better known as iDEX.

Q4.DefenceMedium

How many SIDM Champion Awards were presented by the Defence Minister in New Delhi on 9 October 2026?

  1. A.8
  2. B.12
  3. C.15
  4. D.21
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 15

Explanation

The correct answer is 15. A total of fifteen Champion Awards were handed out, recognising organisations for indigenous technology development, product innovation, design capability, import substitution, excellence in manufacturing and export performance. Option A is wrong, though the number eight does belong to this event in another way, as the awards were given at SIDM’s eighth annual session. Options B and D are wrong because no such count of awards was reported. Keep the two numbers apart in revision: eight for the edition of the annual session and fifteen for the awards. The theme of the session, worth remembering alongside, dealt with sovereign capabilities and contested frontiers, that is, with India’s strategic autonomy at a time of disruption.

The awards covered six broad areas of achievement, namely indigenous technology development, product innovation, design, import substitution, excellence in manufacturing and export performance, and they were given away in New Delhi in the presence of the Defence Secretary, the Director General (Acquisition) and the founder president as well as the serving president of the industry body.
