Why in News

From 26 to 28 October 2026 Union Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik led the Indian delegation to Singapore International Energy Week 2026 and held four bilateral meetings on its sidelines.

Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, headed the Indian delegation to Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2026. The event ran from 26 to 28 October 2026 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. He gave a keynote address on the first day and the opening remarks on the second.

About the event

This edition fell in the 25th year of Singapore's Energy Market Authority. The summit was stretched to two days this time and carried the Singapore-IEA Forum, the Singapore-IRENA Forum and a session of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Figures India put on the table

Installed electricity capacity (30 September 2026)558.9 GW
Non-fossil capacityAbout 308 GW, or 55 per cent
Non-fossil target500 GW by 2030
Rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli YojanaAbout 53 lakh systems, 63 lakh households
PM-KUSUMAbout 12 lakh standalone solar pumps; over 17 lakh grid-connected farm pumps solarised

The Minister pointed out that India crossed the mark of half its installed capacity coming from non-fossil sources in June 2025, five years before the target date written into its Nationally Determined Contribution. The solar pump work alone has added about 16.7 GW of decentralised renewable capacity and reached around 30 lakh farmers.

The four bilateral meetings

  • Singapore: with Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Energy and Trade and Industry. They took up the proposed cross-border electricity link, and Indian interest in Singaporean money going into transmission, pumped storage, battery storage and renewables.
  • Bhutan: with Lyonpo Sonam Tashi, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources. They reviewed the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project, where dam work has moved steadily since concreting restarted in April 2026, noted that the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II plant is running well, and discussed cross-border transmission planning up to 2040.
  • IRENA: with Director-General Mr Francesco La Camera, on deeper work under the Strategic Partnership Agreement that the renewable energy ministry signed with the agency in January 2022.
  • IEA: with Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol, who will release the agency's India Renewable Energy Market Report at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and the India Critical Minerals Report at India Mining Week.

Site visits

The Minister saw Sembcorp's 326 MWh battery energy storage plant on Jurong Island, built from 800 large lithium-ion phosphate batteries and the biggest utility-scale battery storage system in Singapore and Southeast Asia. He closed the tour at Keppel's waste-to-energy plant in the Tuas region, which handles 800 tonnes a day and has a capacity of 22 MW.
