Why in News

On 5 November 2026 the Ministry of Finance said the Inter-Ministerial Group had recommended asset monetisation proposals worth over Rs 1,100 crore, mainly surplus CPSE land and buildings, for approval by the Cabinet-delegated Alternative Mechanism.

The Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) on asset monetisation has recommended proposals covering assets valued at more than Rs 1,100 crore for the approval of the Alternative Mechanism, the body to which the Union Cabinet has delegated such decisions. The announcement came from the Ministry of Finance on 5 November 2026.

Who sits on the group

The IMG is chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises and co-chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications. Besides clearing the fresh proposals, the group reviewed how the asset monetisation initiatives being facilitated by the National Land Monetization Corporation (NLMC) are coming along.

What is being monetised

The proposals relate chiefly to surplus land and building assets belonging to Central Public Sector Enterprises, which have been identified for monetisation. The government treats the recommendations as a milestone in its effort to draw value out of public assets that lie surplus or underused and to put them to productive use instead. The idea behind the wider programme is to let central enterprises and other government bodies realise what their spare assets are actually worth, through orderly assessment, professionally prepared transactions and competitive price discovery.

Remember that the Inter-Ministerial Group is chaired by the Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises, and co-chaired by the Secretary, Department of Telecommunications; that approval rests with the Alternative Mechanism delegated by the Union Cabinet; that the assets are worth over Rs 1,100 crore and are mostly surplus CPSE land and buildings; and that the NLMC is a wholly owned central company under the Department of Public Enterprises, created after a Union Budget 2021-22 announcement.
