SSC CHSL GK Questions 2026

Static GK decides the General Awareness score in SSC CHSL. Of the 25 questions in Tier-I and the 20 in Tier-II, most come from Indian Polity, History, Geography, the Economy and General Science, the areas the CHSL 2026 notice lists as History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy and Scientific Research relating to India and its neighbouring countries. The level is that of Class 12, so the questions are direct: which article, which river, which ruler, which year. Polity asks about parts and schedules of the Constitution, fundamental rights, the President, Parliament, the Supreme Court and constitutional bodies. History covers the Indus Valley, the Mauryas and Guptas, the Sultanate and Mughal periods, and the freedom struggle from 1857 to 1947. Geography asks about rivers, soils, climate, national parks, minerals and world physical features. The Economy part asks about budget terms, the RBI, banking and basic concepts. General Science is school-level Physics, Chemistry and Biology with everyday applications, and Culture covers dances, festivals, monuments and books. This page holds GK24's topic-wise GK notes for SSC CHSL, written as short facts and tables so a topic can be revised in one sitting. Q181.Government SchemesMedium

How many sewer and septic tank workers have been validated under the NAMASTE Scheme?

  1. A.58,412
  2. B.90,186
  3. C.1,24,530
  4. D.2,51,756
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 90,186

Explanation

The correct answer is 90,186. The Ministry's Secretary stated that the sewer and septic tank workers component now covers all 36 States and Union Territories, and that this many workers have been validated. The validated workforce is made up of 86,468 men, 3,713 women and five transgender persons, and these sub-totals add up to the figure in the correct option, which is a quick way to verify the answer. Options A and C are wrong because they do not match any figure reported for this component. Option D is a deliberate trap, because that number belongs to the separate waste picker component, where the profiled count covers 34 States and Union Territories rather than 36. Keeping the two components apart is the key to answering this question correctly.

Q182.Government SchemesEasy

What does NAMASTE stand for in the context of the sanitation workers scheme?

  1. A.National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem
  2. B.National Mission for Advanced Sanitation and Technology
  3. C.National Agency for Municipal Sanitation and Training Enterprise
  4. D.National Authority for Mechanized Sewerage and Treatment
Show answer

Correct answer: A. National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem

Explanation

The correct answer is National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment defines NAMASTE exactly this way, and describes its aim as ensuring the safety and dignity of sanitation workers by creating an enabling ecosystem that recognises their contribution to the operation and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure. Option B is wrong because the scheme is not framed as a mission for advanced sanitation technology, and the word mission does not appear in its name. Option C is wrong because it is not a municipal training agency and it is not confined to urban local bodies alone. Option D is wrong because NAMASTE is not an authority for sewerage treatment but a scheme centred on workers. Full forms of welfare schemes are frequently asked, so learn the expansion word for word.

Q183.Government SchemesMedium

From 11 September 2024, which group was brought under AB PM-JAY irrespective of income, with the Ayushman Vay Vandana card?

  1. A.All ASHA workers
  2. B.All senior citizens aged 70 and above
  3. C.All construction workers
  4. D.All students in government schools
Show answer

Correct answer: B. All senior citizens aged 70 and above

Explanation

The correct answer is All senior citizens aged 70 and above. On 11 September 2024 the Government extended AB PM-JAY to everyone aged 70 and above, regardless of income, covering about 6 crore senior citizens. They receive the Ayushman Vay Vandana card, and more than 1.36 crore such cards had been issued by 21 September 2026.

ASHA workers are the distractor: about 37 lakh families of ASHAs, anganwadi workers and helpers were indeed added, but earlier, in March 2024, and through a separate decision. Construction workers join through the Building and Other Construction Workers boards, and students are not a category at all. The name is easy to place: "Vay" refers to age, so the Vay Vandana card is the one for the elderly.

Q184.Government SchemesMedium

Beneficiary families under AB PM-JAY are identified on the basis of which database?

  1. A.Census 2011
  2. B.Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011
  3. C.National Family Health Survey
  4. D.Aadhaar database
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011

Explanation

The correct answer is Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011. Rural families qualify under six deprivation criteria of the SECC 2011, such as households with only one kucha room, no adult member between 16 and 59, female-headed households without an adult male, households with a disabled member, SC/ST households and landless households dependent on casual manual labour. Urban families qualify under 11 occupational categories, from rag pickers and domestic workers to construction workers and drivers.

Census 2011 is the tempting wrong answer: the SECC was a separate exercise from the population census. The National Family Health Survey is a health survey, not an eligibility list, and Aadhaar is an identity number, not a poverty database. Families once covered under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana are included too.

Q185.Government SchemesMedium

What is the maximum annual cashless hospitalisation cover per family under AB PM-JAY?

  1. A.₹1 lakh
  2. B.₹2 lakh
  3. C.₹5 lakh
  4. D.₹10 lakh
Show answer

Correct answer: C. ₹5 lakh

Explanation

The correct answer is ₹5 lakh. AB PM-JAY provides cashless hospitalisation cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, covering 1,961 procedures across 27 medical specialties at public and private empanelled hospitals. The cover is per family, not per person, and there is no cap on family size or age.

The other amounts are distractors. The scale of use is worth remembering: by its eighth anniversary the scheme had funded about 13.25 crore hospital admissions worth ₹2.03 lakh crore, and over 48.51 crore people, about 33% of the population, held Ayushman cards. The Union Budget for 2026-27 provides ₹9,500 crore for it. A typical example in the backgrounder is a 65-year-old woman from Haryana whose hip surgery costing ₹44,140 was done free under the scheme.

Q186.Government SchemesEasy

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) was launched on which date?

  1. A.15 August 2018
  2. B.23 September 2018
  3. C.2 October 2018
  4. D.1 April 2019
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 23 September 2018

Explanation

The correct answer is 23 September 2018. AB PM-JAY was launched on that date to move India towards universal health coverage, and the PIB backgrounder of 22 September 2026 marks its eighth anniversary. It gives eligible families cashless hospital cover of up to ₹5 lakh a year for secondary and tertiary care through more than 38,000 empanelled hospitals.

The other dates are distractors around well-known days: 15 August is Independence Day, 2 October is Gandhi Jayanti and 1 April is the start of the financial year. Two later dates matter for this scheme and are worth keeping separate: March 2024, when about 37 lakh families of ASHAs and anganwadi workers were added, and 11 September 2024, when all senior citizens aged 70 and above were brought in through the Ayushman Vay Vandana card.

Q187.Indian PolityEasy

How many times has the Preamble to the Constitution of India been amended?

  1. A.Never
  2. B.Once
  3. C.Twice
  4. D.Three times
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Once

Explanation

The correct answer is once. The Preamble has been amended only one time, by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976. That amendment added three words: "Socialist" and "Secular" to the description of India, and "Integrity" to the phrase "unity and integrity of the Nation".

"Never" is wrong because the 1976 change is on record; it is also why the Preamble as quoted today differs from the text adopted on 26 November 1949, which described India only as a "sovereign democratic republic". "Twice" and "three times" confuse the number of amendments with the number of words added, which is three. Keep the two numbers apart: one amendment, three words. The fact that the Preamble can be amended at all was settled by the Supreme Court in the Kesavananda Bharati case (1973), which held that it is a part of the Constitution and can be amended so long as its basic features are not destroyed.

Q188.Indian PolityEasy

Who described the Preamble as the 'identity card of the Constitution'?

  1. A.N.A. Palkhivala
  2. B.K.M. Munshi
  3. C.Sir Ernest Barker
  4. D.Dr B.R. Ambedkar
Show answer

Correct answer: A. N.A. Palkhivala

Explanation

The correct answer is N.A. Palkhivala. Nani Ardeshir Palkhivala, one of India's most eminent jurists and constitutional lawyers, called the Preamble the "identity card of the Constitution", because it tells us in one sentence what the Constitution is, where its authority comes from and what it sets out to achieve.

The other names are linked to different descriptions, and examiners use them precisely because they sound right. K.M. Munshi, a member of the Drafting Committee, called the Preamble the "political horoscope" of the sovereign democratic republic. Sir Ernest Barker, the British political scientist, described it as the "key-note" of the Constitution. Dr B.R. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee, and his best-known description is of Article 32, which he called the heart and soul of the Constitution. Learn these as pairs, because questions often give the phrase and ask for the person, or the other way round.

Q189.Indian PolityAsked in: RRB NTPC · 17 Mar 2026, Shift 3Medium

The Preamble primarily serves as which of the following?

  1. A.A schedule to the Constitution
  2. B.A guiding principle for interpretation
  3. C.A financial guideline
  4. D.An enforceable part of law
Show answer

Correct answer: B. A guiding principle for interpretation

Explanation

The correct answer is A guiding principle for interpretation. The Preamble is not enforceable in a court of law: it is neither a source of power for the legislature nor a limit on its powers. Its main legal use is as an aid to interpretation. When the meaning of a provision of the Constitution is unclear, courts look to the Preamble to understand the objectives the framers had in mind.

The other options describe things the Preamble is not. It is not a schedule: the Constitution's schedules are separate lists placed at the end of the text, such as the list of languages. It is not a financial guideline. And it is not an enforceable part of law, which is the most tempting wrong answer: even after the Kesavananda Bharati case (1973) held that the Preamble is a part of the Constitution, it remained non-justiciable. Being part of the Constitution and being enforceable in court are two different things, and this question tests exactly that difference.

Q190.Indian PolityMedium

In which case did the Supreme Court reverse its earlier view and hold that the Preamble is a part of the Constitution?

  1. A.Berubari Union case (1960)
  2. B.Golaknath case (1967)
  3. C.LIC of India case (1995)
  4. D.Kesavananda Bharati case (1973)
Show answer

Correct answer: D. Kesavananda Bharati case (1973)

Explanation

The correct answer is the Kesavananda Bharati case (1973). In the Berubari Union case of 1960 the Supreme Court had said that the Preamble is not a part of the Constitution, though it is a key to the minds of its makers. In Kesavananda Bharati the Court rejected that view and held that the Preamble is a part of the Constitution and can be amended, provided its basic features are not changed.

The Berubari Union case is the earlier decision that was reversed, so it cannot be the answer. The LIC of India case of 1995 came later and only reaffirmed that the Preamble is an integral part of the Constitution; it did not reverse anything. The Golaknath case of 1967 concerned Parliament's power to amend Fundamental Rights, not the status of the Preamble. The word "reverse" in the question is the clue: it points to the case that overturned Berubari, which is Kesavananda Bharati.

Q191.Indian PolityMedium

From which source did the ideal of social, economic and political justice in the Preamble come?

  1. A.The French Revolution
  2. B.The American Declaration of Independence
  3. C.The Russian Revolution
  4. D.The British Magna Carta
Show answer

Correct answer: C. The Russian Revolution

Explanation

The correct answer is the Russian Revolution. The ideal of justice in the Preamble, described as social, economic and political, was inspired by the Russian Revolution of 1917, which is why books often list the former USSR as its source. It sits alongside the three objectives drawn from France.

The French Revolution is the source of liberty, equality and fraternity, the other three objectives, so it is the most tempting wrong answer. The American connection is to the idea of having a preamble at all, taken from the Constitution of the United States, not to the ideal of justice. The Magna Carta is a landmark of English constitutional history but is not the source of anything in the Preamble. A good way to remember the split: of the four objectives, justice points east, to Russia, while liberty, equality and fraternity point west, to France.

Q192.Indian PolityAsked in: SSC CPO · 11 Nov 2022, Shift 3Easy

The principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity were adopted from the Constitution of:

  1. A.United Kingdom
  2. B.France
  3. C.Canada
  4. D.Ireland
Show answer

Correct answer: B. France

Explanation

The correct answer is France. The ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity in the Preamble were taken from France, where they were the watchwords of the French Revolution. France is also the source of the idea of a republic.

The other options gave India different features. The United Kingdom is the source of parliamentary government, the rule of law, the cabinet system and single citizenship. Canada gave the idea of a federation with a strong Centre and residuary powers vested in the Centre. Ireland gave the Directive Principles of State Policy and the method of electing the President. The ideal of justice in the Preamble, the fourth of its objectives, has a different source again: the Russian Revolution. So of the four objectives, three (liberty, equality and fraternity) trace to France and one (justice) traces to the former USSR, a split that examiners like to test.

Q193.Indian PolityAsked in: SSC CHSL · 9 Mar 2023, Shift 3Easy

The idea of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution is borrowed from the Constitution of _______.

  1. A.USSR (Present Russia)
  2. B.Canada
  3. C.Britain
  4. D.United States of America
Show answer

Correct answer: D. United States of America

Explanation

The correct answer is United States of America. The idea of beginning a constitution with a preamble was borrowed from the Constitution of the USA, whose own text opens with the words "We the People". The content of India's Preamble, however, comes from Jawaharlal Nehru's Objectives Resolution, moved in the Constituent Assembly on 13 December 1946 and adopted on 22 January 1947.

The other countries are sources of different parts of the Preamble or of the Constitution. The USSR is the source of the ideal of social, economic and political justice. Britain gave parliamentary government, the rule of law and single citizenship. Canada gave the model of a federation with a strong Centre. Be careful to separate two different questions that look alike: the idea of having a preamble came from the USA, while the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity written inside it came from the French Revolution.

Q194.Indian PolityAsked in: SSC CGL · 27 Jul 2023, Shift 1Medium

Which of the following is mentioned in the Preamble of the Constitution of India?

  1. A.Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship
  2. B.Fraternity assuring human dignity
  3. C.Equality of status and employment
  4. D.Justice, social, economic and administrative
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship

Explanation

The correct answer is Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship. These are the exact words the Preamble uses for liberty, and they appear in it just as written here.

Each of the other options changes one word of the real text, which is exactly how this question catches people. The Preamble speaks of fraternity "assuring the dignity of the individual" and the unity and integrity of the Nation, not "human dignity". It promises equality "of status and of opportunity", not of status and employment. And justice in the Preamble is "social, economic and political"; the word "administrative" does not appear. When an option looks almost right, compare it word for word with the text: justice (social, economic, political), liberty (thought, expression, belief, faith, worship), equality (status, opportunity) and fraternity (dignity of the individual, unity and integrity of the Nation).

Q195.Indian PolityAsked in: SSC MTS · 15 Jun 2023, Shift 3Easy

Which among the following words were added to the Preamble in the 42nd amendment of the Indian constitution?

  1. A.Socialist
  2. B.Democratic
  3. C.Republic
  4. D.Sovereign
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Socialist

Explanation

The correct answer is Socialist. The 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976 added three words to the Preamble: "Socialist" and "Secular" to the description of India, and "Integrity" to the phrase "unity and integrity of the Nation". It is the only amendment ever made to the Preamble.

Democratic, Republic and Sovereign were all in the Preamble from the start: as adopted on 26 November 1949, it described India as a "sovereign democratic republic". That is why they are wrong here. Questions on this amendment come in several forms: which word was added, which word was not added, or how many words were added. Keep all three in mind together: Socialist, Secular and Integrity, added in 1976. A related fact worth linking is the Kesavananda Bharati case of 1973, which had held three years earlier that the Preamble is part of the Constitution and can be amended without changing its basic features.

Q196.Indian PolityAsked in: SSC CHSL · 10 Jul 2024, Shift 3Medium

Which of the following word sequences is correct as per the Preamble to the Constitution?

  1. A.Sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic, republic
  2. B.Sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic
  3. C.Secular, democratic, secular, socialist, sovereign
  4. D.Socialist, secular, democratic, republic, sovereign
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic

Explanation

The correct answer is Sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic. This is the order in which the Preamble describes India: "a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC". Socialist and secular were inserted between sovereign and democratic by the 42nd Amendment in 1976; before that the phrase read "sovereign democratic republic".

The first option swaps socialist and secular, which is the most common slip, since both words were added at the same time. The third option repeats "secular" and begins with the wrong word, and the fourth moves "sovereign" from the front to the end. A simple way to hold the order is to say the three S-words by sound: So, So, Se (Sovereign, Socialist, Secular), followed by the original last two words, Democratic Republic. The two words added in 1976 sit together in the middle.

Q197.Indian PolityAsked in: RRB NTPC · 14 Jun 2022, Shift 2Easy

Fill in the blank using words contained in the Preamble to the Constitution of India: We, ______, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens....

  1. A.The Supreme Court
  2. B.The Indian Parliament
  3. C.The Central Government
  4. D.The People of India
Show answer

Correct answer: D. The People of India

Explanation

The correct answer is The People of India. The Preamble opens with the words "We, the people of India", which name the people as the source from which the Constitution draws its authority. The Constitution was not handed down by a government, a court or a legislature; the people, through their Constituent Assembly, adopted, enacted and gave it to themselves on 26 November 1949.

The Supreme Court, the Indian Parliament and the Central Government are all created by the Constitution, so none of them can be its source of authority. Each of them exercises only the powers the Constitution gives it. This is the first of the four things the Preamble tells us, the others being the nature of the Indian State (sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic), its objectives (justice, liberty, equality and fraternity) and the date of adoption. A fill-in-the-blank question like this one tests whether you know the exact opening words, so learn the text as written.

Q198.Important DaysMedium

The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre, whose upgrade was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, is located in which city?

  1. A.Jamnagar
  2. B.Pune
  3. C.Jaipur
  4. D.Varanasi
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Jamnagar

Explanation

The correct answer is Jamnagar. The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre is in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and the PIB backgrounder describes it as a primary research and policy hub for traditional medicine. The Union Budget 2026-27 announced its upgrade to promote evidence-based research and global outreach.

The other cities are distractors, though each has some link with Ayush. Pune has well-known Ayurveda and naturopathy institutions, Jaipur hosts the National Institute of Ayurveda, and Varanasi is known for its Ayurveda faculty at Banaras Hindu University. The only WHO centre of this kind in the world is at Jamnagar. India's other global steps include hosting the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine at Bharat Mandapam in December 2025, which adopted the Delhi Declaration, and the Ayush visa, M-3 for patients and M-4 for attendants.

Q199.Important DaysMedium

How much did the Union Budget 2026-27 allocate to the Ministry of Ayush?

  1. A.₹2,408 crore
  2. B.₹3,208 crore
  3. C.₹3,808 crore
  4. D.₹4,408 crore
Show answer

Correct answer: D. ₹4,408 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is ₹4,408 crore. According to the PIB backgrounder on the 11th Ayurveda Day, the Union Budget 2026-27 allocated ₹4,408 crore to the Ministry of Ayush to strengthen Ayush healthcare, promote evidence-based research and innovation, and build infrastructure and global outreach.

The other figures are distractors. The Budget also announced three specific steps worth remembering: the setting up of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda to strengthen education, clinical services and research; the upgrading of Ayush pharmacies and drug-testing laboratories for quality and standardisation; and the upgrading of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre at Jamnagar in Gujarat. Separately, the National Ayush Mission released over ₹6,406.99 crore to States and UTs between FY 2014-15 and FY 2025-26.

Q200.Important DaysMedium

What is the theme of the 11th Ayurveda Day, observed on 23 September 2026?

  1. A.Ayurveda for People and Planet
  2. B.Ayurveda for One Health
  3. C.Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow
  4. D.Ayurveda for Every Home
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow

Explanation

The correct answer is Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow. The PIB backgrounder released on 22 September 2026 says the Government is running a national strategy to revive traditional healthcare under this theme. It fits the focus of this year's messaging: bringing Ayurveda into mainstream public health through clinics, insurance, telemedicine and research, while keeping it evidence-based.

The other options are distractors written to look like typical themes. Themes of important days are a favourite exam question because they change every year, so note the year and edition together: 11th Ayurveda Day, 2026, "Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow". The day is observed on 23 September, aligned with the autumnal equinox, and the nodal ministry is the Ministry of Ayush, which received ₹4,408 crore in the Union Budget 2026-27.
