With reference to Indian history, which of the following statements is/are correct? 1. The Nizamat of Arcot emerged out of Hyderabad State. 2. The Mysore Kingdom emerged out of Vijayanagara Empire. 3. Rohilkhand Kingdom was formed out of the territories occupied by Ahmad Shah Durrani. Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. A.1 and 2
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.2 and 3
  4. D.3 only

Correct answer

A. 1 and 2

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 1 and 2. Arcot grew out of the Nizam's Deccan dominion and Mysore out of the Vijayanagara Empire, but Rohilkhand was carved out of Mughal land, not Durrani's.

The Nawabs of Arcot, or of the Carnatic, began as deputies of the Nizam of Hyderabad, who governed the Deccan for the Mughals; Saadatullah Khan and later rulers made the post hereditary and practically independent. The Wodeyars of Mysore were feudatories of the Vijayanagara rulers and became independent after the empire broke up following the battle of Talikota in 1565. Rohilkhand, east of the Ganga in present Uttar Pradesh, was set up in the 1720s and 1730s by Afghan Rohillas under Ali Muhammad Khan in the declining Mughal province of Katehar, before Ahmad Shah Durrani's invasions began in 1748.

Statement 3 is wrong for that reason. B is wrong because it leaves out statement 1. C and D are wrong because they include the false statement 3.

Exam tip: Arcot ← Hyderabad (Nizam); Mysore ← Vijayanagara; Rohilkhand ← Mughal Katehar, Ali Muhammad Khan.
