  1. A.The Quit India Resolution was adopted by the AICC.
  2. B.The Viceroy's Executive Council was expanded to include more Indians.
  3. C.The Congress ministries resigned in seven provinces.
  4. D.Cripps proposed an Indian Union with full Dominion Status once the Second World War was over.

Correct answer

A. The Quit India Resolution was adopted by the AICC.

Explanation

The correct answer is A, The Quit India Resolution was adopted by the AICC. The All India Congress Committee passed it at its Bombay session on 8 August 1942.

The meeting was held at Gowalia Tank Maidan, now called August Kranti Maidan, in Bombay. In his speech that night Gandhi gave the call "Do or Die". Before dawn on 9 August the government arrested Gandhi and the whole Congress leadership, and the movement spread as a leaderless mass upsurge, with leaders such as Aruna Asaf Ali, Jayaprakash Narayan and Usha Mehta, who ran the secret Congress Radio.

B is wrong: the Executive Council was enlarged with more Indian members in July 1941 under the August Offer line, not on 8 August 1942. C is wrong: the Congress ministries resigned in October–November 1939 to protest India being dragged into the war. D is wrong: Cripps came in March 1942 with his proposals, months before this date.

Exam tip: 8 August 1942 = Quit India Resolution at Bombay; 9 August = arrests and August Kranti Day.
