Who among the following British Commanders suffered defeat in the famous Battle of Chinhat during the 1857 Revolt?

  1. A.Henry Lawrence
  2. B.Captain Hearsey
  3. C.Francois Sisten
  4. D.Charles Ball

Correct answer

A. Henry Lawrence

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Henry Lawrence. Sir Henry Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of Awadh, led a British force out of Lucknow and was defeated by the rebels at Chinhat on 30 June 1857.

Chinhat lies a few miles east of Lucknow. After the defeat, the British fell back into the Lucknow Residency, which the rebels then besieged for months. Lawrence was mortally wounded by a shell inside the Residency on 2 July 1857 and died two days later. In Lucknow the revolt was led by Begum Hazrat Mahal, who placed her young son Birjis Qadr on the throne. The Residency was relieved first by Havelock and Outram and finally evacuated by Sir Colin Campbell in November 1857.

B is wrong: Hearsey was the general at Barrackpore, where Mangal Pandey attacked British officers in March 1857.

C is wrong: Francois Sisten was a native Christian police inspector who left an eyewitness account of the revolt; he led no British army at Chinhat.

D is wrong: Charles Ball was a British writer who produced a history of the Indian Mutiny, not a commander.

Exam tip: Chinhat, 30 June 1857: Henry Lawrence defeated; Lucknow revolt led by Begum Hazrat Mahal.
