Which one of the following is the correct combination of languages included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India?

  1. A.Nepali, Konkani, Tulu and Santhali
  2. B.Santhali, Urdu, Konkani and Maithili
  3. C.Santhali, Konkani, Bhojpuri and Urdu
  4. D.Dogri, Konkani, Bhojpuri and Urdu

Correct answer

B. Santhali, Urdu, Konkani and Maithili

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Santhali, Urdu, Konkani and Maithili. All four are among the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule.

The Eighth Schedule began with 14 languages in 1950, Urdu among them. Sindhi was added by the 21st Amendment in 1967. Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali came in through the 71st Amendment in 1992. The 92nd Amendment of 2003 added Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali, bringing the total to 22. Articles 344 and 351 refer to these languages for the development of Hindi and for official-language commissions. Demands to add others, such as Bhojpuri, Tulu and Rajasthani, are still pending.

A is wrong because Tulu is not in the Schedule. C and D are wrong because Bhojpuri has not been included, although Dogri, Konkani, Santhali and Urdu are.

Exam tip: 21st Amendment Sindhi; 71st Konkani, Manipuri, Nepali; 92nd Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Santhali.
