Which one of the following indexes is used to assess the state of governance across the States and UTs ?

  1. A.Sustainable Governance Index
  2. B.E-Governance Index
  3. C.Urban Governance Index
  4. D.Good Governance Index

Correct answer

D. Good Governance Index

Explanation

The correct answer is D, Good Governance Index. The Good Governance Index (GGI) was designed by the Government of India to compare governance across States and Union Territories.

The GGI was launched by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) under the Ministry of Personnel on Good Governance Day, 25 December 2019. It rates States and UTs across ten sectors, among them agriculture and allied sectors, commerce and industry, human resource development, public health, public infrastructure and utilities, economic governance, social welfare and development, judicial and public security, environment, and citizen-centric governance. States are placed in groups, such as large states, North-East and hill states, and UTs, so that similar ones are compared.

A is wrong because the Sustainable Governance Indicators are prepared by a German foundation for OECD and EU countries, not for Indian states. B is wrong because e-governance assessments look only at digital service delivery, not overall governance. C is wrong because an urban governance index rates cities, not the governance of whole States and UTs.

Exam tip: Good Governance Index: DARPG, launched 25 December 2019 (Good Governance Day), ten sectors.
