Thanesar in Haryana was the capital of which dynasty?

  1. A.Yaudheya
  2. B.Pushyabhuti or Vardhana
  3. C.Tomara
  4. D.Chauhan

Correct answer

B. Pushyabhuti or Vardhana

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Pushyabhuti or Vardhana. Thanesar, the ancient Sthanvishvara in Kurukshetra district, was the capital of the Pushyabhuti dynasty, also called the Vardhana dynasty from the ending of its kings' names. Prabhakaravardhana made it a power, and after the death of his elder son Rajyavardhana the throne passed in 606 to Harshavardhana, who later moved his capital to Kannauj. Harsha's court poet Banabhatta wrote the Harshacharita, and the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang travelled in his reign.

Option A, the Yaudheyas, were a republican tribe of this region in the centuries around the beginning of the Christian era, known from the coin moulds of Khokhrakot in Rohtak, but they had no single capital of this kind. Option C, the Tomaras, are associated with Dhillika, the early Delhi, and with Anangpur near Faridabad. Option D, the Chauhans of Ajmer, ruled this country only after they took Delhi from the Tomaras, and it was on Haryana soil, at Tarain, that they met Muhammad Ghori.
