The Harappan site of Rakhigarhi is located in which district of Haryana?

  1. A.Fatehabad
  2. B.Hisar
  3. C.Rohtak
  4. D.Bhiwani

Correct answer

B. Hisar

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Hisar. Rakhigarhi lies in Hisar district and covers the land of two villages, Rakhi Khas and Rakhi Shahpur, on a dried channel of the Drishadvati, today called the Chautang. By area it is the largest Harappan site known in India, larger than Dholavira. It was excavated for the Archaeological Survey of India by Amarendra Nath between 1997 and 2000, and later by a team led by Vasant Shinde, and its mounds have yielded planned streets, drains, fire altars, seals, bangle workshops and a cemetery.

Option A, Fatehabad, is the district of three other Harappan sites, Banawali, Kunal and Bhirrana, and is the commonest wrong answer for that reason. Option C, Rohtak, holds Farmana, where a large Harappan cemetery was excavated, and Khokhrakot, which gave the coin moulds of the Yaudheyas. Option D, Bhiwani, holds Mitathal, a late Harappan settlement. Keep the four districts and their sites together as one table.
