One year at a planet is 8 times as large as compared to the one year at the Earth. Which one of the following is correct about the planet's orbit?

  1. A.The semimajor axis of the planet's orbit is same as that of the Earth.
  2. B.The semimajor axis of the planet's orbit is twice as compared to that of the Earth.
  3. C.The semimajor axis of the planet's orbit is thrice as compared to that of the Earth.
  4. D.The semimajor axis of the planet's orbit is four times as compared to that of the Earth.

Correct answer

D. The semimajor axis of the planet's orbit is four times as compared to that of the Earth.

Explanation

The correct answer is D, four times that of the Earth. Kepler's third law says the square of a planet's orbital period is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of its orbit.

Writing it as T² ∝ a³, a period 8 times the Earth's gives T² = 8² = 64 times. The cube of the semimajor axis must then be 64 times, and the cube root of 64 is 4. So the planet's average distance from the Sun is four times the Earth's, about 4 astronomical units. Kepler published this law of periods in 1619; Newton later showed that it follows from the inverse-square law of gravitation.

A, the same axis, would give the same year as the Earth, not one eight times longer.

B, twice the axis, gives a period of √8, about 2.8 Earth years.

C, thrice the axis, gives √27, about 5.2 Earth years, still short of 8.

Exam tip: T² ∝ a³; a year 8 times longer means 4 times the distance, and 27 times longer means 9 times the distance.

Bronze is an alloy of copper and

  1. A.nickel
  2. B.iron
  3. C.tin
  4. D.aluminium
Show answer
Correct answer: C. tin

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, usually about 88 parts copper to 12 parts tin. Adding tin makes copper harder, stronger and easier to cast, and bronze also resists corrosion well.

Consider the following actions :

1. Detection of car crash/collision which results in the deployment of airbags almost instantaneously

2. Detection of accidental free fall of a laptop towards the ground which results in the immediate turning off of the hard drive

3. Detection of the tilt of the smartphone which results in the rotation of display between portrait and landscape mode

In how many of the above actions is the function of accelerometer required?

  1. A.Only one
  2. B.Only two
  3. C.All three
  4. D.None
Show answer
Correct answer: C. All three

An accelerometer measures acceleration, including the pull of gravity, and each of the three actions depends on reading it. An accelerometer is a small sensor, today usually a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) chip, that senses changes in speed and the direction of gravity.

Consider the following statements :

1. Carbon fibres are used in the manufacture of components used in automobiles and aircrafts.

2. Carbon fibres once used cannot be recycled.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.Both 1 and 2
  4. D.Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Correct answer: A. 1 only

Carbon fibre is widely used in cars and aircraft for its strength and low weight, and it can be recovered and recycled.
