Consider the following statements regarding the delimitation exercise carried out in Assam in 2023 : 1. The delimitation of constituencies was done on the basis of 2001 census. 2. No increase was made in the number of ST Assembly seats. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.Both 1 and 2
  4. D.Neither 1 nor 2

Correct answer

A. 1 only

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 1 only. The 2023 delimitation in Assam used the 2001 Census figures, but it raised the number of Assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

The Election Commission of India carried out the exercise under Section 8A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which allowed delimitation in Assam and some other north-eastern states that had been deferred earlier. As the law required, the population figures of the 2001 Census were used. The final order of August 2023 kept the total at 126 Assembly and 14 Lok Sabha seats, but raised the seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the Assembly from 16 to 19 and for Scheduled Castes from 8 to 9.

Option B is wrong because statement 2 is false: ST seats went up. Option C is wrong because only statement 1 holds. Option D is wrong because statement 1 is correct.

Exam tip: Assam delimitation 2023 used Census 2001; total seats unchanged (126 and 14), ST seats 16 to 19, SC seats 8 to 9.
