Consider the following statements regarding Industrial Corridors in India : 1. They are linear development zones. 2. They connect all major State capitals through an integrated network of roads, railways, ports and airports. 3. They promote acceleration of industrial growth. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 and 2
  2. B.1 and 3
  3. C.3 only
  4. D.1 only

Correct answer

B. 1 and 3

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1 and 3. Industrial corridors are linear development belts built along a transport spine to speed up industrial growth, but they do not link all State capitals.

An industrial corridor is planned along a major freight route such as a dedicated freight corridor or a highway. Industrial clusters, logistics parks, smart cities and power and water supply are developed in a band on either side, so factories get quick access to ports and markets. India's first was the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor, and others include the Amritsar–Kolkata, Chennai–Bengaluru and East Coast corridors, overseen by the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation. Each corridor joins particular economic centres and gateways, not every State capital.

A is wrong because statement 2 is incorrect; corridors connect selected industrial nodes and ports, not all major State capitals. C is wrong because it leaves out statement 1, which is correct. D is wrong because it leaves out statement 3, which is the very purpose of a corridor.

Exam tip: industrial corridor = linear zone along a freight spine; first was Delhi–Mumbai (DMIC), built along the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
