Consider the following statements : 1. The International Solar Alliance was launched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2015. 2. The Alliance includes all the member countries of the United Nations. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.Both 1 and 2
  4. D.Neither 1 nor 2

Correct answer

A. 1 only

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 1 only. The International Solar Alliance was launched at the 2015 climate conference, but it does not include every UN member. India and France launched the ISA on 30 November 2015 at COP21, the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, the same meeting that produced the Paris Agreement, so statement 1 is correct. It aims to spread solar energy and mobilise investment for it, especially in sunny developing countries. Its headquarters is at Gurugram in Haryana, making it the first treaty-based international organisation based in India. Membership was first meant for countries lying fully or partly between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and was later opened to all UN member states, but each country has to sign and ratify the framework agreement to join, and many have not, so statement 2 is wrong. Option B is wrong because statement 2 is false. Option C is wrong because it accepts statement 2. Option D is wrong because statement 1 is true. Exam tip: ISA = India and France, COP21 Paris, 2015, headquarters Gurugram.
