Consider the following statements : 1. Lions do not have a particular breeding season. 2. Unlike most other big cats, cheetahs do not roar. 3. Unlike male lions, male leopards do not proclaim their territory by scent marking. Which of the statements given above are correct ?

  1. A.1 and 2 only
  2. B.2 and 3 only
  3. C.1 and 3 only
  4. D.1, 2 and 3

Correct answer

A. 1 and 2 only

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 1 and 2 only. Lions breed at any time of year and cheetahs cannot roar, but male leopards do mark their territory with scent.

Lions have no fixed breeding season; a lioness can come into heat in any month, and the females of a pride often give birth at about the same time. Cheetahs belong to their own genus, Acinonyx, and lack the flexible voice box of lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars of the genus Panthera, which lets those cats roar; cheetahs instead purr, chirp and make bird-like calls. Leopards are solitary and strongly territorial; males spray urine, leave scrapes and claw marks on trees and use calls to tell rivals that an area is taken, much as lions do.

Statement 3 is wrong: male leopards rely heavily on scent marking.

So B, C and D, which include statement 3, are wrong.

Exam tip: roaring cats = genus Panthera (lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar); the cheetah purrs and chirps. India brought cheetahs back to Kuno in 2022.
