Consider the following events : 1. The first democratically elected communist party government formed in a State in India. 2. India's then largest bank, 'Imperial Bank of India', was renamed 'State Bank of India'. 3. Air India was nationalised and became the national carrier. 4. Goa became a part of independent India. Which of the following is the correct chronological sequence of the above events ?

  1. A.4-1-2-3
  2. B.3-2-1-4
  3. C.4-2-1-3
  4. D.3-1-2-4

Correct answer

B. 3-2-1-4

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 3-2-1-4. The events run Air India's nationalisation (1953), the birth of the State Bank of India (1955), the Kerala communist government (1957) and Goa's liberation (1961). Under the Air Corporations Act, 1953, the government took over the private airlines and formed Air India International and Indian Airlines. On 1 July 1955 the Imperial Bank of India became the State Bank of India under the SBI Act, 1955. In April 1957 the Communist Party of India under E. M. S. Namboodiripad formed the government in Kerala, one of the first elected communist governments anywhere. In December 1961 Operation Vijay ended Portuguese rule, and Goa joined India. Option A is wrong because it puts Goa, the latest event, first. Option C is wrong for the same reason, and it also places Air India last. Option D is wrong because it puts the 1957 Kerala government before the 1955 founding of SBI. Exam tip: Air India 1953, SBI 1955, Kerala's EMS ministry 1957, Goa 1961.
