Consider the following dynasties : 1. Hoysala 2. Gahadavala 3. Kakatiya 4. Yadava How many of the above dynasties established their kingdoms in early eighth century AD?

  1. A.Only one
  2. B.Only two
  3. C.Only three
  4. D.None

Correct answer

D. None

Explanation

The correct answer is D, None. All four rose much later, between the 10th and 12th centuries, mostly as feudatories who broke away from the declining Western (Kalyani) Chalukyas or the Pratiharas.

The Hoysalas of Karnataka rose in the 11th century and became independent under Vishnuvardhana in the 12th, ruling from Dwarasamudra (Halebidu). The Gahadavalas took Kannauj and Varanasi in the late 11th century; their best-known king, Jaichand, fell to Muhammad Ghori in 1194. The Kakatiyas of Warangal became independent in the 12th century and reached their height under Ganapatideva and Rudramadevi. The Yadavas or Seunas of Devagiri became an independent power under Bhillama V in the late 12th century.

A, B and C are wrong: not even one of these dynasties founded its kingdom in the early 8th century, the age of the Pallavas, early Rashtrakutas and Palas.

Exam tip: Hoysala (Dwarasamudra), Kakatiya (Warangal), Yadava (Devagiri) and Gahadavala (Kannauj) all belong to the 11th-12th centuries; all four were ended by the Delhi Sultanate or Ghori.
