A tennis ball of mass 350 g is thrown vertically upwards at a speed of 4 m/s. If M is the maximum gravitational potential energy of the ball and H is the maximum height it reaches, then which one of the following is correct? (Take g = 10 m/s²)

  1. A.M = 5·6 J, H = 1·6 m
  2. B.M = 2·8 J, H = 1·6 m
  3. C.M = 5·6 J, H = 0·8 m
  4. D.M = 2·8 J, H = 0·8 m

Correct answer

D. M = 2·8 J, H = 0·8 m

Explanation

The correct answer is D, M = 2·8 J, H = 0·8 m. At the top of its flight all the kinetic energy of the ball has turned into gravitational potential energy.

The mass is 350 g, that is 0·35 kg. Its kinetic energy at launch is ½mv² = ½ × 0·35 × 4 × 4 = 2·8 J, so the maximum potential energy M is also 2·8 J (air resistance is ignored). The height follows from mgH = 2·8 J, or more simply from H = v²/2g = 16/20 = 0·8 m. Note that the height does not depend on the mass at all.

A is wrong: 5·6 J comes from forgetting the ½ in the kinetic energy, and 1·6 m from using v²/g.

B is wrong: the energy is right but the height is doubled by dropping the 2 in v²/2g.

C is wrong: the height is right but the energy is doubled.

Exam tip: for a body thrown straight up, H = u²/2g and the energy at the top equals ½mu²; always convert grams to kilograms first.

Brilliance of diamond is due to

  1. A.interference of light
  2. B.diffraction of light
  3. C.polarization of light
  4. D.total internal reflection of light
Show answer
Correct answer: D. total internal reflection of light

Light that enters a cut diamond is reflected again and again inside it before it escapes, which makes the stone sparkle.

Which one of the following is NOT an electromagnetic wave ?

  1. A.Light wave
  2. B.Radio wave
  3. C.Sound wave
  4. D.Micro wave
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Sound wave

Sound is a mechanical wave that needs a medium to travel, while the other three are electromagnetic waves. Sound travels as a longitudinal wave of compressions and rarefactions in air, water or solids, which is why it cannot pass through a vacuum.

Which one of the following is NOT true for an electromagnetic wave ?

  1. A.Electromagnetic wave transports energy and momentum
  2. B.Electromagnetic wave can be polarized and reflected
  3. C.Electromagnetic wave is longitudinal
  4. D.Electromagnetic wave propagation is described by the varying electric and magnetic fields
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Electromagnetic wave is longitudinal

Electromagnetic waves are transverse, not longitudinal, so this statement is false. In an electromagnetic wave the electric field and the magnetic field oscillate at right angles to each other and both at right angles to the direction in which the wave travels.

Which one of the following frequency ranges is sensitive to human ears ?

  1. A.0-200 Hz
  2. B.20-20,000 Hz
  3. C.200-20,000 Hz only
  4. D.2,000-20,000 Hz only
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 20-20,000 Hz

The normal human ear hears sound from about 20 hertz to 20,000 hertz, the audible range. Frequency, measured in hertz, is the number of vibrations per second, and it decides the pitch of a sound: the higher the frequency, the shriller the note.
