  1. A.Hydroxyl, -OH
  2. B.Aldehyde, -CHO
  3. C.Carboxyl, -COOH
  4. D.Ketone, -CO-
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Carboxyl, -COOH

The hardening of vegetable oil into vanaspati by passing hydrogen over a nickel catalyst is an example of

  1. A.Substitution reaction
  2. B.Addition reaction
  3. C.Displacement reaction
  4. D.Neutralisation reaction
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Addition reaction

Vegetable oils contain unsaturated chains with carbon to carbon double bonds; hydrogen adds across those double bonds in the presence of nickel or palladium, turning them into single bonds, so the oil becomes saturated and sets into a solid fat.

Q5091.General ScienceMedium

Two consecutive members of a homologous series differ by

  1. A.CH2 and 14 units of mass
  2. B.CH3 and 15 units of mass
  3. C.C2H4 and 28 units of mass
  4. D.CH4 and 16 units of mass
Show answer
Correct answer: A. CH2 and 14 units of mass

Going from methane to ethane, or from ethanol to propanol, adds one carbon atom of mass twelve and two hydrogen atoms of mass one each, which is fourteen in all, and it is this fixed step that defines a homologous series.

Q5092.General ScienceMedium

Why does graphite conduct electricity while diamond does not?

  1. A.Graphite contains metal impurities
  2. B.Each carbon atom in graphite has one free electron
  3. C.Graphite is made of a different element
  4. D.Diamond has a lower melting point
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Each carbon atom in graphite has one free electron

In graphite every carbon atom is bonded to only three others within a layer, so the fourth valence electron of each atom is free to move along the layer, and moving electrons constitute an electric current.

  3. C.Hazardous combustion
  4. D.Insufficient oxygen
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Complete combustion of fuel

When enough air reaches the burner, every carbon atom of the fuel is oxidised fully to carbon dioxide and the flame is blue and hot, giving the maximum heat for the gas consumed.

Which non-metal is a good conductor of electricity?

  1. A.Sulphur
  2. B.Graphite
  3. C.Phosphorus
  4. D.Iodine
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Graphite

Graphite is an allotrope of carbon in which each atom is bonded to three others, leaving one electron per atom free to move through the layers, so it conducts electricity although it is a non-metal; this is why graphite is used for electrodes and in dry cells.
