The seasonal variations in the amount of solar energy that any place on the Earth receives are influenced by

  1. A.the speed of rotation of the Earth
  2. B.pollution
  3. C.cloudiness
  4. D.the inclination of the Earth about its axis
Show answer
Correct answer: D. the inclination of the Earth about its axis

Because the axis is tilted and keeps pointing the same way as the Earth goes round the Sun, each place gets more sunlight in one half of the year and less in the other.

Q2025.General ScienceAsked in: UPSC CAPF · CAPF 2026, Paper IMedium

For a particle in uniform circular motion (radius R and angular velocity ω), the magnitude and direction of acceleration, respectively are

  1. A.ωR, along the radius outward
  2. B.ωR, towards the centre of the circle
  3. C.ω²R, towards the centre of the circle
  4. D.ω²R, along the linear velocity
Show answer
Correct answer: C. ω²R, towards the centre of the circle

In uniform circular motion the speed stays the same but the direction keeps turning, and that change needs an acceleration pointing to the centre.

Q2026.Environment & EcologyAsked in: UPSC CAPF · CAPF 2018, Paper IMedium

The National Green Tribunal, set up to deal with the expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection, was set up under the

  3. C.10th Five-Year Plan
  4. D.9th Five-Year Plan
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 11th Five-Year Plan

The National Green Tribunal was established in October 2010, and the 11th Plan ran from 2007 to 2012. The tribunal was created by the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, which drew on Article 21's right to a healthy environment.

Q2027.Environment & EcologyAsked in: UPSC CAPF · CAPF 2024, Paper IHard

Which of the following statements about CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms) is/are correct?

1. These are an emerging set of trade policy tools to allow movement of carbon-intensive economic activity from a jurisdiction having less stringent climate policy to a jurisdiction having stringent climate policy

2. These are meant to increase the environmental effectiveness of climate policies

Select the answer using the code given below:

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.Both 1 and 2
  4. D.Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 2 only

A carbon border adjustment exists to stop carbon-intensive activity from moving out of a strict jurisdiction, not to help it move, and its aim is to make climate policy work better.

Q2028.General ScienceAsked in: UPSC CAPF · CAPF 2026, Paper IEasy

A uniform current-carrying narrow solenoid produces

  1. A.uniform magnetic field inside the solenoid
  2. B.uniform magnetic field outside the solenoid
  3. C.magnetic field with straight field lines in all the regions
  4. D.magnetic field with oscillating nature
Show answer
Correct answer: A. uniform magnetic field inside the solenoid

Inside a long, narrow solenoid the field lines run straight and parallel and are evenly spaced, which is the picture of a uniform field.

Q2029.General ScienceMedium

Which of the following is the main reason why meiosis is important for sexually reproducing organisms?

  1. A.It repairs damaged tissues
  2. B.It keeps the chromosome number constant across generations and creates genetic variation
  3. C.It allows cells to grow larger
  4. D.It produces identical copies of the parent cell
Show answer
Correct answer: B. It keeps the chromosome number constant across generations and creates genetic variation

If gametes carried the full chromosome number, fertilisation would double it in every generation. Meiosis halves the number when gametes are formed, so that the union of two gametes restores the original diploid number and keeps it constant from one generation to the next.

Q2032.General ScienceHard

In anaphase I of meiosis, unlike in the anaphase of mitosis,

  1. A.the centromeres split and sister chromatids separate
  2. B.the centromeres do not split and whole homologous chromosomes move to opposite poles
  3. C.the chromosomes line up at the equator
  4. D.the nuclear envelope is formed
Show answer
Correct answer: B. the centromeres do not split and whole homologous chromosomes move to opposite poles

This single difference is the reason meiosis I is called the reduction division. In anaphase I the two homologous chromosomes of each bivalent are pulled to opposite poles, but each of them still consists of two sister chromatids joined at an undivided centromere.

Q2033.General ScienceMedium

The pairing of homologous chromosomes during prophase I is called

  1. A.synapsis
  2. B.terminalisation
  3. C.disjunction
  4. D.cytokinesis
Show answer
Correct answer: A. synapsis

In the zygotene sub-stage of prophase I the two members of each pair of homologous chromosomes come to lie side by side along their whole length, matching point for point, and the structure that forms between them and holds them together is called the synaptonemal complex.

Q2035.General ScienceEasy

How many daughter cells are produced at the end of meiosis in one parent cell, and of what kind?

  1. A.Two diploid cells
  2. B.Two haploid cells
  3. C.Four haploid cells
  4. D.Four diploid cells
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Four haploid cells

Meiosis begins with a single round of DNA replication and is then followed by two successive nuclear divisions. Meiosis I is the reduction division, in which homologous chromosomes separate and the two cells formed already carry half the parental chromosome number.

Q2036.General ScienceMedium

Cytokinesis in a plant cell differs from that in an animal cell because

  1. A.a cleavage furrow forms in the plant cell
  2. B.a cell plate forms in the plant cell
  3. C.the plant cell does not divide its cytoplasm
  4. D.the plant cell divides its nucleus twice
Show answer
Correct answer: B. a cell plate forms in the plant cell

An animal cell divides its cytoplasm by a cleavage furrow, in which the plasma membrane is pulled inward around the middle until the cell is pinched into two.

Q2039.General ScienceEasy

Mitosis is called the equational division because

  1. A.it produces four daughter cells
  2. B.the chromosome number of the daughter cells is the same as that of the parent cell
  3. C.it halves the chromosome number
  4. D.it occurs only in reproductive cells
Show answer
Correct answer: B. the chromosome number of the daughter cells is the same as that of the parent cell

In mitosis each centromere splits in anaphase and one chromatid of every chromosome goes to each pole, so the two daughter cells receive exactly the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell had, and exactly the same genetic information.
