World Tourism Day 2026 Theme Puts AI at Heart of Travel

Travel gets its own date on the world calendar every year, and in 2026 it arrives with a technology question attached to it. World Tourism Day 2026 is observed on 27 September and carries the theme Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism. The global observance for this edition is hosted by El Salvador. A backgrounder put out by the Press Information Bureau on 26 September 2026 used the occasion to set down how far Indian tourism has come and where its digital push is headed.

India's central celebration

The main Indian function is at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, where Union Minister for Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat unveils the National Digital Tourism Stack. This is an open digital public infrastructure built so that what a destination offers becomes easier to find, reach and trust. Beside it comes Dekho Apna Desh 2.0, meant to put visit-ready but lesser known places on the map and spread tourist traffic more evenly across the country. Agreements with industry bodies are also being signed under the Incredible India framework. Telangana is running cultural shows, workshops and its State Tourism Awards, while the Delhi government marks the day with a two-day programme called RANG RAS ROOH at Baansera, the bamboo park at Sarai Kale Khan on the bank of the Yamuna.

The sector by the numbers

The contribution of tourism is measured through the Tourism Satellite Account, the official framework for the direct and indirect weight of the sector. By that reckoning tourism accounts for 5.22% of national GDP, and the jobs it supports rose from 6.94 crore in 2019-20 to 8.46 crore in 2023-24.

The digital spine

The e-Visa facility, which began in 2014 for nationals of 43 countries, is open today to nationals of 172 countries, with entry allowed through 88 international ports. NIDHI+, the national database of the hospitality industry, listed 63,740 accommodation units as on 23 September 2026. Air links are widening as well: 687 RCS UDAN routes joining 95 airports are already in operation, and the modified UDAN scheme for 2026-27 to 2035-36 has an approved outlay of Rs 28,840 crore covering 100 airports and 200 modern helipads.

Where the day comes from

World Tourism Day is an initiative of the UN World Tourism Organisation. The date recalls the adoption of the statutes of that body in 1970, and the day has been marked since 1980. Its purpose is to show what travel does for incomes, for jobs and for the Sustainable Development Goals.
