Why in News

A backgrounder issued on 24 October 2026 set out the working of VB-G RAM G, the rural employment framework that replaced the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA from 1 July 2026, along with its progress figures as on 24 September 2026.

The Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), shortened to VB-G RAM G, is the rural employment framework that has replaced the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA. The VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 came into force on 1 July 2026 and now runs in every rural area of the country. The ministry describes the changeover as seamless, with the digital systems that support it working from day one. The framework is aligned with the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.

The Act gives a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work. Work is taken up in four thematic areas: water security, core rural infrastructure, livelihood-related infrastructure and the mitigation of extreme weather events.

Viksit Gram Panchayat Plans

At the centre of the new law is the Viksit Gram Panchayat Plan (VGPP), a bottom-up plan recommended and approved by the Gram Sabha. The plan begins with an inventory of assets already built in the panchayat under central and state programmes, identifies the gaps, and then prioritises works. Planning uses GIS tools including Yuktdhara and PM Gati Shakti, which helps avoid duplication of assets. Plans are consolidated at block, district, state and national level and feed the Viksit Bharat National Rural Infrastructure Stack. The VGPP framework lists 318 types of permissible works across the four themes.
