IAF C-130J Airlifts Critical Patient from Leh to Palam
An Indian Air Force C-130J flew a critically ill 30-year-old civilian from Leh to Palam at night, and the patient was shifted to AIIMS for treatment.

Why in News
The Ministry of Defence said an Indian Air Force C-130J flew a short-notice casualty evacuation at night, airlifting a critically ill civilian patient from Leh to Palam, after which the patient was moved to AIIMS.
A C-130J transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force carried out a casualty evacuation at short notice, flying a critically ill civilian patient out of Leh late at night and landing at Palam so that treatment could continue in the capital. The patient, aged thirty, was taken on to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after landing.
A flight made at short notice
The crew was given very little warning before the sortie. The aircraft flew in darkness and in weather that the Ministry of Defence described as challenging, a combination that leaves no room for delay or error. The Ministry said the mission called for a high degree of operational preparedness, professional coordination between the agencies involved and execution within the time the patient's condition allowed.
Why flights out of Leh are difficult
Leh sits high in Ladakh, where thin air, mountain terrain and quickly changing weather make flying demanding at the best of times, and more so after dark. Hospitals in such a region can stabilise a patient but a critical case often has to be moved to a larger institution, and the only practical way to cover that distance in time is by air. That is the gap a military transport aircraft fills when it is called in.
What the mission shows
- The evacuation was flown by a C-130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force from Leh to Palam
- The patient was a civilian, which places the sortie among the humanitarian tasks the force performs
- The patient was handed over to AIIMS for further medical care
Points for an aspirant
Casualty evacuation, often shortened to casevac, is counted among the aid-to-civil-authority duties of the armed forces, alongside flood relief, earthquake response and the airlift of stranded people. Questions in general awareness papers tend to ask which aircraft was used, where the patient was flown from and where the aircraft landed, so the chain of Leh to Palam and then to AIIMS is worth remembering, along with the aircraft type and the fact that the mission was flown at night.
