Why in News

On 18 October 2026 the Department of Posts reported its progress under Special Campaign 6.0, the nationwide drive on grievance redressal, cleanliness, e-waste disposal and space management running from 2 to 31 October 2026.

The Department of Posts, which works under the Ministry of Communications, has reported the ground it covered in the first half of Special Campaign 6.0. The drive is running at postal establishments across the country from 2 to 31 October 2026, and the figures made public cover progress up to 16 October 2026.

What the campaign sets out to do

The campaign is meant to make cleanliness a settled practice at government offices rather than a one-off exercise. Along with that it works to bring down the heap of pending cases, to put official records in better order, and to see that electronic waste is thrown away responsibly. The department says the purpose behind all of it is a better place to work for its staff and a better experience for the citizen who comes to the counter.

The targets set

  • Resolve 1,50,000 public grievances
  • Dispose of 1,500 appeals
  • Run cleanliness drives at 1,35,000 sites across the country

Where the department stood on 16 October

  • Cleanliness activities were carried out at 73,814 sites, post offices among them, about 55 per cent of the target
  • A total of 1,00,214 public grievances were resolved, roughly 67 per cent of the target
  • 764 appeals were disposed of, close to 51 per cent of the target

Scrap, e-waste and the money they fetched

Since 2 October 2026 the department has cleared 3,06,026 kg of scrap, which earned revenue of Rs 67.56 lakh. Apart from that, 17,980 kg of electronic waste was disposed of in a scientific manner and brought in Rs 27.64 lakh. The department reads these numbers as a sign of how it now handles obsolete electronic equipment.

Waste to Wealth, and DigiPost

Postal circles have taken up ideas of their own to push recycling and reuse. In the West Bengal Circle, departmental carpenters and Multi-Tasking Staff did up the Senior Manager's chamber at the Mail Motor Service in Kolkata using recycled wooden scrap, an illustration of the Waste to Wealth idea. On the service side, the department has introduced DigiPost, a phygital mail service through which traffic e-challans issued by the Gujarat Police are sent digitally and then delivered on paper to the citizen. It shows how far a physical postal network can carry a service that begins online.
