PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana Completes One Year

Why in News

PMDDKY completed one year of implementation on 11 October 2026, and at an event in New Delhi on 12 October 2026 the Agriculture Ministry named Gaya, Nagaur and Umaria its best-performing districts and announced the Khet Bachao Abhiyan.

The Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) finished its first year of implementation on 11 October 2026, and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare marked the occasion with an event on 12 October 2026 at the Bharat Ratna C. Subramaniam Auditorium of the National Agricultural Science Complex, Pusa, New Delhi. More than 370 delegates from the states took part, among them District Collectors, district-level functionaries, agricultural scientists and progressive farmers from the scheme's districts, alongside Union Ministers, Secretaries of central departments and the scheme's Central Nodal Officers.

What the scheme does

Announced in the Union Budget 2025-26 and rolled out on 11 October 2025, PMDDKY works in 100 districts picked for weak productivity, thin cropping intensity and poor flow of farm credit. It pools 36 central schemes of 11 ministries and departments with relevant state schemes into one convergent framework, so each district can act on its own priorities. Every district prepares an action plan around its soil, rainfall, cropping pattern, water availability, infrastructure and farmers' needs, and a District Dhan-Dhaanya Samiti steers planning and execution. A dedicated dashboard ranks districts every month against 121 indicators, which is meant to keep the effort transparent and competitive.

Districts honoured

Three districts were placed at the top overall: Gaya in Bihar first, Nagaur in Rajasthan second and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh third. Another 18 districts were honoured for standout work on the scheme's six objectives, namely higher productivity, crop diversification with sustainable practices, more post-harvest storage, better irrigation, easier short-term and long-term credit, and improved governance and service delivery. Three districts also presented their own ideas: Gadchiroli on water conservation and drought resilience, Alluri Sitharama Raju on high-value horticulture, and Banka on its Lilawaran natural farming land revival model.

What the minister said

Union Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the opening year had gone into building foundations and the second must show results that can be measured on the ground. He listed productivity, cropping intensity, irrigation and water management, access to farm credit, high-value agriculture, post-harvest infrastructure and farm incomes as the areas to push, and said the real test of the scheme is the change it brings to farmers' lives. He also flagged the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, to be held in every state from 22 October to 30 November 2026 for balanced fertiliser use and better soil health, and repeated the aim of turning all 100 districts into models of farm prosperity.

Practice Questions

Q1.Government SchemesMedium

Which district was ranked the best-performing district under the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana?

  1. A.Nagaur, Rajasthan
  2. B.Umaria, Madhya Pradesh
  3. C.Gaya, Bihar
  4. D.Banka, Bihar
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Gaya, Bihar

Explanation

The correct answer is Gaya in Bihar, which secured first position among the best-performing districts when the scheme completed its first year. Option A, Nagaur in Rajasthan, is wrong only in rank: it was placed second, so a careless reader picks it. Option B, Umaria in Madhya Pradesh, came third, and the order Gaya, Nagaur, Umaria is exactly the sequence a paper setter likes to test. Option D, Banka, did feature at the event, but for a different reason: it presented the Lilawaran natural farming land revival model as an innovation, and it was not among the three top-ranked districts. Along with the top three, another 18 districts were honoured for exemplary work on the six objectives of the scheme, which range from raising productivity to better governance and service delivery. District performance under the scheme is measured on a dashboard built around 121 indicators, with rankings refreshed every month.

Q2.Government SchemesEasy

How many districts does the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana cover?

  1. A.50
  2. B.100
  3. C.250
  4. D.500
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 100

Explanation

The correct answer is 100. The scheme was designed for one hundred districts selected on three measures: low agricultural productivity, low cropping intensity and limited disbursement of agricultural credit. Because the districts are chosen on need rather than on population or area, the number is fixed, and the stated ambition is to make every one of these hundred districts truly rich in grain and in prosperity. Options A, C and D are plausible-looking round numbers of the kind used in other central programmes, but none of them is the figure for this scheme. What makes the coverage distinctive is the method rather than the count: each district writes its own action plan around its soil, rainfall, cropping pattern, water availability and infrastructure, a District Dhan-Dhaanya Samiti coordinates the work, and 36 central schemes of 11 ministries and departments are converged with state schemes in that single plan.

Q3.Government SchemesMedium

The Khet Bachao Abhiyan, announced at the PMDDKY anniversary event, is aimed mainly at which objective?

  1. A.Promoting soil health through balanced use of fertilisers
  2. B.Doubling farm exports in three years
  3. C.Distributing free electricity connections to farmers
  4. D.Setting up new agricultural universities in every state
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Promoting soil health through balanced use of fertilisers

Explanation

The correct answer is promoting soil health through balanced use of fertilisers. The campaign is to be organised across all states from 22 October to 30 November 2026, and the minister asked state governments and the authorities concerned to take part actively so that it reaches farmers. The stated purpose is the balanced and judicious use of fertilisers, together with sustainable farming practices that keep soil fertile, protect the environment and conserve natural resources for later generations. Option B is wrong because no export target of that kind was set out at the event; the emphasis was on outcomes in the districts rather than on trade. Option C describes a power-sector benefit and does not belong to this campaign. Option D is wrong because the scheme works through existing institutions, including Krishi Vigyan Kendra scientists and district administrations, instead of creating new universities.
