Why in News
On 28 September 2026 the Ministry of Culture highlighted the 31 mementos from Tamil Nadu in the 8th PM Mementos e-Auction, which stays live online until 2 October 2026.
The 8th edition of the PM Mementos e-Auction is live online until 2 October 2026, and Tamil Nadu is represented in it by 31 mementos. The Ministry of Culture describes the state's contribution as a spread across sacred traditions, classical art, traditional craftsmanship, historic figures and sporting memorabilia. Bids are placed on the auction portal pmmementos.gov.in.
Devotional and artistic pieces
One of the items that stands out is a framed auspicious footprint from Kanyakumari, presented by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. It is linked to Sri Padhaparai, traditionally believed to carry the footprints of Goddess Kumari. Another memento shows Sant Shri Ramanujacharya, the philosopher and theologian, in a teaching pose.
The collection also carries a handcrafted Thiruvalluvar Chariot, modelled on the temple chariots of Tamil Nadu, a metallic Nataraja statue showing Lord Shiva in his cosmic dance, and a Tanjore-style Veena artwork finished with gold foil and Kundan stones. A traditional Tanjore painting of Lord Murugan, a gold-foil depiction of the same deity, a framed devotional work of Sri Sowmya Narayana Perumal and a brass memento of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple are also part of the set, along with South Indian angavastras with zari and woven borders.
Sporting memorabilia

Practice Questions
Which edition of the PM Mementos e-Auction is live online until 2 October 2026?
- A.6th edition
- B.7th edition
- C.8th edition
- D.9th edition
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 8th edition
Explanation
The correct answer is the 8th edition. The auction of mementos, gifts and souvenirs received by the Prime Minister is being held online in its eighth round and remains open for bidding until the second day of October, with participation through the auction portal. The other options name earlier or later rounds that are not the one now in progress, and they are placed in the question only as distractors. Examiners like this kind of item because the answer combines an ordinal number with a closing date, and both can be asked separately. Tamil Nadu alone accounts for thirty-one of the pieces in this round, which range from temple art and traditional textiles to rackets and shoes connected with the state's leading para athletes.
How many mementos from Tamil Nadu feature in the PM Mementos e-Auction 2026?
- A.18
- B.24
- C.31
- D.47
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 31
Explanation
The correct answer is 31. That is the number of pieces from Tamil Nadu placed in this round of the auction, and together they are meant to show the state's spiritual traditions, classical art, craftsmanship, historical figures, textiles and sporting achievements. The other three numbers are invented and appear only to test recall of the exact figure. Among the thirty-one items are a framed auspicious footprint from Kanyakumari presented by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, a memento of Sant Shri Ramanujacharya in a teaching pose, a handcrafted Thiruvalluvar Chariot, a metallic Nataraja statue, a Tanjore-style Veena artwork decorated with gold foil and Kundan stones, a brass memento depicting the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, and South Indian angavastras worked with zari and woven borders. Sporting memorabilia forms the other part of the same set, so a candidate who remembers the figure should also be able to name at least one art piece and one sports item from the state.
Shoes associated with which three-time Paralympic medallist in high jump are part of the Tamil Nadu collection in the auction?
- A.Mariyappan Thangavelu
- B.Thulasimathi Murugesan
- C.Nithya Sre Sivan
- D.Sharath Kamal
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Mariyappan Thangavelu
Explanation
The correct answer is Mariyappan Thangavelu, who has won Paralympic medals three times in the high jump and whose shoes form part of the sporting memorabilia in this collection. Option B, Thulasimathi Murugesan, is wrong because her contribution is a signed badminton racket, and she is remembered for winning silver in badminton singles at the Paralympics. Option C, Nithya Sre Sivan, is wrong for a similar reason: the item linked to her is a badminton racket, and she won a medal at the Paralympics held in Paris. Option D is wrong because that table tennis player's equipment does not figure in the list of Tamil Nadu pieces described for this round of the auction. Note that all three genuine sports items belong to para athletes.
